Penn

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
totally unrelated question. Does anyone know if we're going to have to buy coveralls and rubber boots if we plan on doing some of the clubs out at New Bolton? Thanks! 😀

You'll get plenty of information on that from the school over the next few months - don't worry about it now, follow their instructions.

We did buy coveralls on our own (they recommend a place in Center City, which I personally thought was way overpriced compared to the internet), but we didn't have to buy boots until we got to school, and they put together a mass order for us. But, don't buy anything until they tell you what to buy. It just makes life easier.

So yesterday was the last day of interviews at Penn, right?

I assume that means that those of us on hold will be hearing from them soon?

I got an acceptance call today at around 2:30. I interviewed on 2/13, IS. 🙂

Good luck to everyone waiting to hear something!

congrats EqSci! Thats great! I just interviewed yesterday, and can't say it went all that well. But they told us we'd be hearing by next week because they were having a dinner on Friday night during which they were going to finish filling the class.

Thank you! If it makes you feel any better, I felt my interview went pretty bad. I posted this on another thread, but I called a catheter a "tubey thingy" and really rambled trying to explain an Xray. So there's still hope for you! I'll be crossing my fingers!

Congrats Eqsci!! Are you coming to join us at Penn 🙂thumbup:👍👍) or sticking w Iowa?

Nope, I will be turning down Penn. I think it's an amazing vet school and I was very impressed, but I just do not want to do city life and the cost is not much difference IS vs. OOS when your IS is Penn! 😉 So for all those IS that are on the waitlist, there will be one more spot for you! 🙂

So has anyone else heard anything?

I have a feeling that if we're getting rejected we won't know until we get a letter in the mail.

OK. Decision time is getting closer :scared:. I have thought of some random questions.

- How "tech" friendly is Penn?
Are the buildings wireless? Do a lot of students bring laptops to class? I remember reading that the lectures were recorded, are they recorded digitally? If so, can you access them from anywhere?

- For LA/Equine people, what opportunities are available for getting hands on experience during the first two years while you are at the Philly campus? How active are the student clubs (i.e. SCAAEP)? Is it at all feasible to try to foal sit/be on ICU/Colic team (if that exists at Penn) during your first two years given the commute to NBC?

I am have severe procrastination finishing my biochem online course (which is required for my other schools)! I spent hours (I mean HOURS) last night browsing around the Penn curriculum and reading about the LA Block and I must say, it really looks amazing. I was drooling over the electives offered on the Equine Major worksheet...😍

I also stumbled accross a page that says after 6 pm you can bring your dog to study with you (not to Hill but to quad area buildings). Is this true? That is kind of awesome!

Sorry if some of these have already been answered, I am hoping to just gather up as much info as possible to help me decide. I am sure I will think of some more random questions, but until then if anyone has any insight (current students or students-to-be!) let me know 🙂

tpad -

WHERE did you find this info? I'd love to take a look at it but apparently you are better at navigating that site than I am, since I haven't found it...

How "tech" friendly is Penn?

Penn certainly talks the talk. Walking the walk is lagging a bit behind, though. Most buildings and most places are wireless, though there are a still a few holes in the network (there are parts of the classroom that the first years are using this year that have spotty network access, but future classes will be smaller and won't have to use that room as much). I've noticed that the classes below mine have a LOT of people with laptops in class, definitely more than my class. The library in Hill rents out laptops as well. Getting support for your computer and the network can be a little tricky. Lectures are digitally recorded (GREAT quality) and available on a network that can be easily accessed from campus and not-so-easily accessed off campus. There are rumors of them being video recorded in the future, synched with the powerpoints, but apparently the professors are holding this up out of a fear that no one would come to class (which is quite reasonable, because we wouldn't).

Not being a horse person, I can't speak too much to hands on opportunities in the first two years, except to say that no matter what else you hear, there are more opportunities for hands-on stuff for large animal people than there are for small, and they tend to have faculty that are more interested in students and education than the small animal faculty. But such is life.

I just took LA Block, and all of the horsey classes in it. They were, mostly, great. Keep in mind the caliber of faculty that you'd be studying under here. Some of the best horse vets in the country.

I also stumbled accross a page that says after 6 pm you can bring your dog to study with you (not to Hill but to quad area buildings).

By quad area buildings, do you mean only in the vet school? You can bring your dog to the student lounge in Rosenthal, and any other rooms in Rosenthal, any time you like. People study with dogs in the lounge all the time. Dogs are verboten in Hill (which is really annoying). They're also forbdden in the anatomy lab, which would affect you first year.

What page did you find this on? I'm curious.

Thank you nonvideas! That was great!

As for how I found this stufff...it was in the wee hours of the morning so I am not sure I can recall all the sketchy internet browsing... I started by googling Penn Large Animal Block I think...

Here is the Pet Policy page I found: http://www.vet.upenn.edu/Educationa...sInfo/SchoolPolicyPets/tabid/632/Default.aspx

And here is fun curriculum browsing site (some of it outdated):
http://www.vet.upenn.edu/Educationa...rCurrentStudents/Forms/tabid/628/Default.aspx

I could see why maybe no dogs in anatomy lab would be reasonable... Even though it would probably be the dream of a lifetime for my evil terrier.

That is interesting that there are more LA opportunities than SA, I have always assumed the opposite!

That is interesting that there are more LA opportunities than SA, I have always assumed the opposite!

Yeah, I think it's mainly to do with the fact that there are teaching animals at NBC, and large herds of animals that are more disposable (for lack of a better word) than the patients at VHUP. SA people wanting hands on experience have to go to the shelters, and that's less of an option now than it used to be.

As for the pet policy, I've never heard of the "after 6 PM" thing being enforced. I bring my dog into rosenthal any time I please. And for all their talk about dogs in VHUP, clinicians (and some fourth year students) bring their dogs to work all the time, and whenever there are parties in the VHUP basement there are dogs everywhere. So that's not really enforced either.

I know that a bunch of people had dogs down there after my interview was finished. I stopped there for few minutes before driving back home.

It was pretty cool 🙂

I just took LA Block, and all of the horsey classes in it.

I'm intrigued as to which one of my classmates has discovered SDN 🙂

There are plenty of LA opportunities to be had. The Equine, Repro, and Food Animal clubs are very very active and there are usually wetlabs at least once a month. The equine club just revived the defunct colic team last spring, it is now an Emergency shadowing program and allows interested students to sign up for shifts to shadow for any emergency that comes in, not just colics. Equine club has also done dentistry, farrier, joint injection, bandaging, colic workup, ophthamology, disaster preparedness and several other labs. Repro does several mare palpation labs, breeding soundness exam labs, dystocia/fetotomy labs, and other labs. They also have a program where students can shadow for a weekend at a time at a large breeding and foaling operation in central PA. Food Animal does palpation labs, calving labs, and some other fun stuff. There is also a equine neonatology elective and swine husbandry electives for 2nd years that involve a lot of time at NBC in the NICU and swine units respectively. So plenty of stuff to do if youre willing to make the drive and have the time when youre not studying.

- For LA/Equine people, what opportunities are available for getting hands on experience during the first two years while you are at the Philly campus? How active are the student clubs (i.e. SCAAEP)? Is it at all feasible to try to foal sit/be on ICU/Colic team (if that exists at Penn) during your first two years given the commute to NBC?

lots 🙂

it does depend on who in the class of 2012 is running the Equine Club next year, but we just had that meeting today, and it looks like a good bunch of ambitious people. anyway, to give you an idea, this year we did wet labs such as:
joint injection
colic work-up
opthamology
post-sx bandaging
farriery
endoscopy

other things at new bolton: "meet the residents" dinner, "meet the faculty" dinner, repro and emergency case studies with residents. the repro club often teams up with the equine club to do mare palpation labs, stallion handling labs, and breeding soundness exam labs.

randoms: sports med case study in philly, lunch talks, dinner talks, a sponsored day with Dr. Anderson of Equine Veterinary Care at Fair Hill, MD, a sponsored day with the vets at Philadelphia Park is in the works.

and yes, the colic/emergency team is available for you to go out and shadow as little or as often as you'd like. in second year, there's an Equine Neonatology elective in which foal sitting is mandatory. and yep, even a lot of small animal people rave about LA block in third year. i can't wait!! 👍

as far as "tech friendly," i think the school does pretty well. Hill, B101, the labs (except anatomy) are wireless. that's pretty much everywhere you'll be as a first and second year. and like nonvideas said, the lecture audio is good quality; though i'm not sure what was meant by not easily accessible off campus. it's just a password protected website that you can access from anywhere.

i think that was it. and ha, i see deanna beat me to it. good job 🙂

... I just found out today that I have the incredible opportunity to pick between UC Davis and Penn Vet!!!! This is such an amazing situation to be in, I can barely believe that it's really happening, but the reality is that I do have to pick. I loved both schools and the students made me feel so welcome, I really don't know how I'm going to decide.

The posts on here from current students have really helped, though!!!

I have two more questions:

I can't remember what our tour guides said about the dissections in anatomy class-- what species do you guys dissect other than a dog? and how are the large-animal portions handled? do you guys do the dissections or do the instructors provide prosected specimens??

Deanna and nonvideas-- I am really curious about the surgery labs in 3rd year-- what kinds of surgeries do you do? I'm assuming you do spays and neuters, and I remember a mention of doing surgeries on ponies and then adopting them out? Anyone care to confirm???

Thanks again to everyone 😍 for your input! I have no idea how I'm going to make this decision but no matter what I decide I have loved being part of the Penn Vet thread!!

Thank you so much for your replies everyone! 🙂

Random thing - is there a website for the equine club? I thought I remember seeing one but can't find it anymore.

WOAH WOAH WOAH WOAH.... WOAH.... woah woah... woah.

You can't just drop a bombshell like that on us lol

Did you get a call today from Penn saying you were being accepted? Had you previously been on the Hold list?

EDIT: Nevermind. The "acceptances" thread indicates you were accepted to Penn on 2/13. You had me going there for a minute 🙂

heheh sorry for the confusion, redsteven! i haven't posted here in a while, been too busy obsessively waiting to find out if i was even going to have a decision to make!

Lol that's okay.

I'm just starting to get worried though because i THOUGHT that their last day of interviews was March 20th, and EqSci got notified on March 21. Haven't heard from anyone else though

Does anyone know who I would ask, or when the info might be given out, about the Parents and Partners Day? I mentioned it to someone in admissions (eatpinkpenguins, it was your guy... I forgot his name?), and he said it's handled by another department and he knew nothing about it. I'm just wondering because my mom is self employed and will need some notice so she can arrange for time away... and same goes for my dad too actually. If they notify you a couple of months in advance it's no problem, but if they tell you the week of orientation that won't really work for me 😛

Thanks!

ETA: was it Rob Demeo? I think that's it...

Hmmmm, I didnt even know such a day existed. I email all my questions to Malcolm Keiter, he seems to know everything and is very nice. I would ask him.

Hey Shanomong, I just did a search and found this page, about the 2008 Parents & Partners Day: http://www.vet.upenn.edu/CalendarandEvents/ppday2008/tabid/1174/Default.aspx

At the bottom of the page it says to contact Darleen Coles, Special Events Coordinator, at 215-746-2421, for more information. Perhaps she'll know what's goin on this year.

I received my rejection letter today! At least now I have closure...I knew I was rejected for a while now, but it is good to finally have the letter!

Yep, just got my rejection via email.

Good luck to everyone!

alternate list for me...am definitely taking one of my other offers though.

No closure here... I'm on the alternate list.

Does anyone know any statistics for Penn's alternate list? How many people do they put on it? I'm guessing that it can't be THAT many people, since they only interviewed what... 250 people or so? And they've probably made offers to at least half of those...

I'm on the alternate list too...

As far as I know, if you respond saying that you would like to stay on the list, you can find out your rank after April 15th.

...a bunch of crazy (good crazy, but still crazy) stuff has just happened in my husband's life (yay awesome new job!!) and I have made the decision to decline my offer at U Penn in order to accept at UC Davis so that I can stay closer to home for the next few years. I'm sad to be turning down *such* an incredible offer but I also *love* Davis and am hoping that I can spend some time at U Penn as an intern or resident in my future career!!!!

hopefully this will help an OOS alternate get that special phone call!!

CONGRATS again to everyone, I have loved this thread, and GOOD LUCK to those of you still waiting!!!!!!!

Another quick question for the Penn people...

Y'all mentioned on our tour that there was a happy hour every Friday evening, but that you were in jeopardy of losing it because you were all getting a little too "happy."

As a graduate of the former #1 party school in the US (I say former because they have elected this year to be removed from the Princeton Review, haha), I am very into the idea of a happy hour and was just curious about what it's current status is? I can imagine nothing more fun than cheap beer, good people and dogs, so I really hope it'll still be around for next year!

Can any current UPenn Vet Students please answer this question.

What are your study habits like after class? Do you study in groups mostly, do you study alone how many nights a week would you say you get together? And in what areas are most vet students living?

The reason I'm asking is because I'm looking at an apt. in South Philly which is about 4 miles away. I don't know if it is a good idea to be this far from the action. Also, does anyone know what the traffic is like heading in that direction?

Thank you!!!

Julie,

When looking at apartments in South Philly, you should keep in mind that the South St. Bridge, which is the main way to get from there to campus, will be closed for the next two years. I have a bunch of friends in SP, and they're getting by, but it's a lot more inconvenient for them than it was before the bridge closed. They have to go up to Walnut St to get across the river, or down to Grey's Ferry, which isn't a pleasant walk or bike ride and has really bad car traffic. I, personally, wouldn't recommend south philly just out of convenience. 4 miles is especially far, and driving (which will usually be during rush hours) will likely be a pain, not to mention pretty expensive.

First year, 2/3 of my class lived in West Philly (University City, whatever you want to call it). That number has dropped, probably to about 1/3 or so (this is very unscientific). A lot of people have moved out of the city and are commuting in or spending most of their time at New Bolton, and a bunch of people moved downtown.

My study habits have always been very independent of others. I don't study well in groups, I'm too prone to distraction. I do 95% of my studying at home, alone or with one other student, and only rarely study at the library. Everybody's different though.

And we better not be losing happy hour... i've already made plans for dog sitting on Fridays so I won't have to drive home to get them and can just go straight there 😛. It was one of the most exciting things I took away from my interview lol

Does anybody know how happy hour works? Do they get a bar to sponsor it? How else do they provide cheap beer? Is that the only thing offered, or is there also snacks, entertainment, etc? Where does the money for this come from?

I know you guys are super proud of happy hour (I would be too!) but I wanted to look into starting something like this at Iowa if possible (just dreaming at this point), so I'd appreciate any help.

Mostly I'd love it for the doggie playtime, as would my dog!!

I think the key thing is just alcohol being allowed in the student lounge. Somone brings 2 coolers of beer that I'm assuming they purchased, and they charge a dollar each for the "domestic" and 2 dollars for "imports". Beer + people results in beer pong, cards, etc... and everyone brings their dogs. It's nothing fancy... I don't think it's actually sponsored by the school, just tradition? Maybe a current student could chime in... Either way it's like a house party more than anything else, I doubt you'd have trouble getting people in on that at Iowa 😀

Hey everyone,

I just looked at my first two apartments on saturday and was disappointed (predictably 🙁 ) at Pine Terrace and another place. Any thoughts on Garden Court Plaza? Thanks!

i like!! my boyfriend lives there in a one bedroom with hardwood floors, lots of windows (corner apartment), and an expansive living room. there's always someone at the front desk, passcode protected entrance and elevators. maintenance may leave something to be desired (a little sloppy, and a little slow to respond) but nothign terrible.

i wouldn't live any further west, nor stray much north or south of garden court by yourself, but it's a pleasant walk to school, and a nice building.

there's also the Fairfax, on 43rd and Locust, owned/managed by the same group. i don't think it's quite as nice, but it might be cheaper, and its closer to school.

I visited yesterday it was 👍👍👍 😀

Now I just need to wait until end of may to see if they will have an apartment.

I was wondering though, someone posted on the Penn class of 2013 website that computers are really helpful in histo and other classes, but on my tour, our tour guide said that only 10% or so of people have them. I have a lap top w a really big screen that isn't too easy to carry around. What are your thoughts on laptops for Penn?

It is nice to have the computer to reference during histo and neuro lab, but yeah, probably about 10% of our class reliably brings their laptops to lab.

I never do and it's not an issue, I just look at stuff when I get home. I wouldn't stress about it 😀

This thread has been too quiet 🙁 I finally got my PennKey and PennID, it is feeling a bit more "real"!

I am trying to figure out what to do with my summer...my lease is up here in Virginia at the end of May. I could probably sublet something here very easily (college town) and keep working at my jobs or I could move home (Mass) for a month or so and try to work there or potentially move to Philly as early as June 1. Part of me wants to just pick up and go to Iceland while I have a chance!! Bleh...I hate moving.

On that note, anyone bringing/brought a horse to school or know anyone who has? I am trying to explore this option, although I think it is only a slim possibility (sad). Any ideas for places, let me know!

Im also trying to decide what to do this summer. I just found out I don't need to take another english class though, so that is good news. I dont mind moving, but I hate looking for jobs. Anyone want to offer me one?
