after reading the thread on the one who is quitting, I was interested in the side topic of Betablocker for performance anxiety and other anxiolytic use by students in pharm school. Would anyone else like to share whether they currently do or would be willing to take such drugs given our many presentations we must give? Just curious...

I get performance anxiety in the bed. When I tried a beta blocker, it lowerd my blood pressure as well as something else even Caverject can't fight 🙁

i can't... im washing my hair...

I know of a few people in my class who take clonazepam b/c they get so worked up over having an exam. Personally, I think that's pretty silly. If you're going to get THAT worked up over having to take an exam, pharm school is not the place for you and/or your priorities are waaaaaay out of wack. just my .02 worth on that.

i wouldn't take propranolol or anything like that if that is what you are talking about- side effects seem to risky.

Anxiety and panic disorder are real phenonmena. I would hope that by the time you graduate pharmacy school you understand that anyone can be affected (i.e. a pharmacy student).

Let's try to be a little less judgemental.

Without being facetious, what are the "risky" side effects of one 40mg tablet of propranolol? For quite a few of my classmates, the benefit outweighs the "risk".

I'll admit to taking a small dose of clonazepam once before an ACS gen chem final. I went into a real, hard-pounding, hyperventilating panic attack for some reason. It worked wonders. By the time the exam time rolled around, I was calm, alert (or nervous in a normal way) and ready to go. Did well on the exam too, by the way.

I'd never done that before and I've not done it since. But I can see how someone with generalized anxiety or panic disorder would benefit.

Dude, you're in Colorado. Running at high altitude is THE BEST anxiety reliever. For real, I envy your location.

"Running With the Buffaloes" by Chris Lear is my all time favorite book. Check it out sometime.

You clearly do not KNOW the people I am talking about as I do. They aren't taking the drugs b/c they have a real disorder- they're taking the drugs b/c they simply can't handle test taking. It's much like people who take ADHD meds just to study for an exam. Any other day they wouldn't need the drugs. Then again, maybe it is a mental disorder to have an irrational fear of not making an A on every single exam. These people don't need drugs- they need a swift kick in the pants and a reality check reading "if you don't make an A on every exam you're still going to graduate and life will go on".

Beta-Blocker helped my buddy's putting..and he kicked my ass.

Beta-blockers are a bad idea if you're cramming for an exam:

For presentation use, not a bad idea, but I'd say its a bad idea for studying. Personally, I find that I'm unable to study and remember unless I have the pressure (and adrenaline I'd assume) from the night of an exam.

When you get to be my age performance and the anxiety associated with it both go away. Something for you to look forward to
