This is a kind of an off the wall question about personal appearance that's not really significant in the grand scheme of things. However it has been something on my mind for a while now.

I was wondering what you guys thought about Hair styles. I used to always get my hair cut like a "fade" which is basically a neater version of a high and tight that military guys get. I never really thought about it but a while ago some one made a remark to me that I looked like "stevie wonder" the only thing that came to my mind was that stevie wonder is black because I'm obviously not blind.

So basically this guy was trying to say I am trying to be black with my haircut like this. I may have been overreacting but I've been critical of that remark ever since he made it to me.

A lot of questions come to my mind about this since I am not a very "self aware" type of individual.
Does having my hair cut like this make me appear to be immature?

More importantly, do I look less professional with my hair cut like this?

Am I just overreacting and no one really cares what my hair cut is?

Ever since then I have been letting my hair grow out, but to be honest with you I can't stand it. It is a lot of work in the morning just keeping it combed and waiting for it to dry.
I thought personal appearance wise I looked ALOT better with the "fade" it was clean cut and very low maintenance.

If you guys feel I should have a more buisiness type of hair cut and that is more proper for the Pharmacy field then I will stay with it.

How about a beard? I have a friend who is a doctor, and he told me to shave it for the interview. Actually, he said that shaving is a must. I'd rather not, though. Is it not okay if trim it, and just shave around the edges to keep it neat?

I'd think a trimmed neat haircut would look better.. But that's just my preference. Now that you mention it-- I wonder if women should keep their hair down or pull it back to look more professional..?

I wouldn't worry about it too much unless you have an interview coming up soon.

haha...what's wrong with a fade? all the asian guys i know have one...then again, i don't know very many black people. If someone told me that, I'd look at them funny.

Most black people do fade their hair. I used to rock the "fade" look all throughout middle/high school!

Now; however, I'm trying the fro (thats a picture of me in my avatar)...hopefully I won't to cut my hair come interview time....

I always thought that pulling it up was better, and my sister thought so too. She said that almost everyone had their hair pulled up/back at her med school interview. But that was like four years ago. At my pharmacy school interview, almost everyone wore their hair down. I guess it doesn't really matter as long as it looks nice. I would go with whatever you're most comfortable with. For me, I would have to wear my hair up, else I'd be pushing away from my face all the time and that would be distracting during the interview.

I shaved my gotee for my interview. The only reason I did it though was because I thought it was a little uneven in places. I'm real OCD about it and would have been thinking about it during the interview. It was just easier to shave it off rather than try to touch it up so that it looked "perfect."

I think the fade looks fine, don't worry about what other people say about your hair if you like it and think its appropriate then it probably is.

Stevie Wonder has dreads now and back in the day, he had a fro. I wouldn't put too much thought into what that dude was saying because he obviously doesn't know what he's talking about. He probably just said you looked like the first black guy he could think of in his head. And in regards to guys' hair cuts, I think the most important aspect is looking clean.

What about a gotee though? I have had mine for a long time. I keep it neatly trimmed. Should I shave it for the interview??

I think it's fine as long as it looks neat and trim.

Dude i'm from NY and trust me, looks does matter. I come from a very professional background kin and when my father use to interview people that had 13 yr old hair cutts, my dad would'nt even interview them. Clean normal hair cutt, no facial hairs, try to keep-off the ghetto look. Remember, you're going for an interview of a lifetime, don't let some stupid 13 yr old or rapper look ruin it. Hope this helps and good luck, don't forget the tie.

You can look professional with facial hair.

There's nothing like a haircut you could set your watch to! That's really old-school, though. The "crew-cut" days (which I don't mind)...

But I think there's a wider range of professional appearances than that.

Here in Hawaii, probably half of the students have visible tattoos....long hair styles/etc. You see all types of people here and the admissions board don't care as long as you are a good student and act professional. It is really laid back here, which is terrific!

*****THIS IS NOT ME*****

I was looking around for a pic of my haircut and I found this......this is eamon the singer.

I look a lot like him and we have exactly the same type of hair.... Since we're both italian.

What do you think of this hair cut......I get my hair cut like this alot and also a fade.

What do you think about a guy that looks like this with this type of haircut??...unprofessional?

This is the fade haircut I get......minus the facial hair.

TBDrays, in my opinion, that type of hair cut is quite suitable for a professional setting 🙂

Fade is fine, when you start shaving lightning bolts or your high school football number into your head then it is time to ask yourself if your haircut will close doors for you.
I will probably throw a mohawk into the haircut rotation this year for the hell of it.

Should I get a trim before interviews?

To Mr. Mullet: Say no to a haircut and new shorts. Both look FANTASTIC.

Do get contacts though. 👍
You need to stop hiding those beautiful eyes!

I have a small dilemma when it comes to appearance. I have to send a photo to one of the schools I'm applying to (my second choice, Mercer). However, I only have one decent pic of myself....

Or course edit'd for privacy....

But the thing is I can't get a new pic because I still have an Afro. I wish I had buttoned upt that shirt, but I think it's decent.

Of course, if and when I do get an interview I'll cut the almighty 'fro. It's no big deal, all I need is 4 months to re-grow thanks to my East African genes.

Wow, I am so jealous of your ability to grow a fro that fast. It has taken a year for my hair to grow five inches in length!

Like you, I am applying to Mercer and I am contemplating what to do with my hair. I don't want to cut it off. I'd rather wear it as is or, perhaps, braid my hair? However, I don't want the admissions committee to associate my potential braids with any negative imagery 🙁

What's the big deal with hair. Geez it's only hair, it'll grow back anyway. Also, I believe once in pharmacy school, you'll have to maintain a professional look which means kissing ur fro goodbye. Besides, i'm sure you'll look better without one.

I wouldn't go to an interview (or send in a picture!) of myself with any kind of long/tall hair. You don't know who you are going to be dealing with and how they will react.
