Can anyone give me some information about the various programs in Philadelphia? I'm sure they're all good, and as such I'm having a difficult time telling them apart. I've done searches on this and still haven't found comprehensive posts, so no flames please...
Where would you go if you were interested in Philly, and why?
briefly for the philly ones (what i know)
drexel (mcp/hahnemann) -- now based at Hahnemann (level one trauma center), center city philly. brand new ED (30 or so beds). great critical care experience (EM run ICU no other rotators). no off service rotations (no general medicine, no trauma); strong ultrasound experience; strong "community" rotations (more bread and butter but also very high acuity) -- still in the city but not university based so less struggles with surgery for procedures, anesthesia for tubes, etc...
temple -- building new ED, lots of trauma, volume, pathology; limited community experience. most "county" like in the philly area. like docB said.
einstein -- 4 years, mixed DO/MD. fulfills DO pgy-1 rotating year requirement like docB said. brand new ED recently (50 + beds) high volume, acuity. inner city.
jefferson -- ED in center city; critical care experience at jefferson and community hospital -- acuity much less at community ICU; trauma at jeff and lourdes in jersey (i think); limited "bad" trauma in center city phily; strong surg deparment --> more fights for procedures; recently became a department (3 years ago or so) but has been around much longer as a residency; supposedly has nicer schedule for residents
upenn -- 4 years, very strong med/surg --> limited procedures in ED?; many off service rotations -- including trauma, medicine, icu. newer program -- getting stronger; high academics -- great teaching from faculty;
cooper -- in camden, across the river; limited knowledge but from what i know -- great pathology, lots of trauma; strong ultrasound
finally
christiana -- about 40 minutes away in delaware -- happy residents, good volume, some say it's more community-like in feel but christiana itself supports a large hospital with their own IM/surg/OB-gyn residents (and more); i think their residents are well treated.
Really this area is saturated with ED's and residency programs. There are 5 level one Trauma Centers in Philadelphia. A lot of people train in the Philly area but leave once training is done, secondary to malpractice issues, city living issues, etc. Philly is not the nicest urban areas though it's a great city to live in as a resident -- lots of bars/restaurants, relatively low cost of living (vs. boston, nyc, san fran) but not a place to raise a family -- burbs are much better for that.
good luck. hope this was helpful. btw, this is one person's opinion -- if you don't agree, that's fine but don't get nasty....
