I recently came across an opportunity to take a phlebotomist course which includes a week long class followed by a week of clinicals. What I'm thinking is this job would bring me great clinical experience (something I'm having trouble finding now, outside of volunteering at the local hospital) and enable me to have patient/professional interaction and give me experiences that will benefit me on the application AND I will also get paid simultaneously. What I'm looking for is some advice or insight from someone who has maybe taken this route before or avoided this route for some reason. Thanks in advance!

It's great as long as you have work experience. The certification itself isn't worth much. Feel free to PM me.

I did phlebotomy for 1.5 years and the experience I had is irreplaceable! You get to develop a knack for interacting with difficult patients because they're always complaining and never want to be stuck. You get to be in the middle of Code blues, know how to act when you're successful at your task and when you're not (hard sticks), know how to Communicate with patients professionally and efficiently, interact with Drs and Nurses, and Perform an essential clinical task. I was asked about my experience as a Phlebotomist at every interview I went to and what I shared seemed to be very well received. (The pay was not much though)

The risk of not getting a job and spending 500 buck on a class is too high where I am. Look up on indeed and other job sites to see if there are enough jobs for you to get. In this market you have to be careful... adcoms will ask why you got the cirtification and no job.
