Yeah so I'm taking bio and chem this year (and next year probably orgo and biochem and stat since I have calc this year) I was wondering I think I read it's generally looked down upon to take your prerequisite classes over the summer for various reasons (they want to see you can handle it along with a full load of other courses, etc), but I was wondering if it would be frowned upon to take Physics over the summer. I mean, I know physics is a prerequisite, but come on, I'm taking all the science that I'm actually going to see again during the regular year right? Anybody else done this?

also, I'm only taking one semester of calculus

I don't think theres any problem doing Physics over Spring/summer. I did Ochem1 over spring and no one ever told me there was a problem with it.

But not spring/summer just summer

What's the difference? At my school they are both 2 months long.

I took ochem1 and 2 over the summer, and same with genchem 1 and 2 and so far I have recieved 2 interview invites....unless you are taking it at a community college, I dont know why it would be looked down upon if its the same class.

I don't see how they could look down on it... its harder IMO. For physics over the summer, be prepared to be craming non-stop. I did organic 1 and 2 last summer and thats how it was. I personaly feel like physics is a harder subject, but probably better suited for summer since it is less memorization. Organic really sucked over the summer, I'm not sure I would really recommend it.

The main problem is that if you do crappy on a test, there is really not the time to be studying your arse off to ace the next test and make up for it. So you have to be on top of things from day 1.

I took physics last year. I never went to lecture and would open the book about 5 days before the tests and really cram it. I usually had the highest grades in the class. So I think it's pretty doable. If you're good at math.

I don't think that schools look down on taking classes over the summer...unless it's at a community college. I took tons of my pre-reqs over the summer...as long as you get "A's" nobody cares! Actually, it's more challenging, because it moves so quickly and if you screw up there's no time to make up for bad test scores. Physics is perfect for summer...just cram like crazy and you can do well. You won't really be using physics in dental school, and it's not on the DAT so it's best just to motor through it and get good grades.

Orgo SUCKS over the summer...avoid that if possible. You need time to understand Ochem I or else you will not get Ochem II at all.

I disagree...I think that if you have a good professor (which I did), orgo is perfect for the summer. I like taking the challenging courses over the summber b/c that's the only thing I need to focus on without having to worry about other courses. I had a good summer...I hung out with friends on the weekends and studied hardcore over the week. I was able to get an A both semesters...one thing I must recommend if you're taking orgo over the summer, do NOT take it with a lab. If at all possible, take the lab over the schoolyear and the lectures in the summer.

I agree totally; being able to focus on it exclusively helped me... although I'm taking ochem2 now in the fall. But yeah, the problem with ochem1 in the summer was that we had to do two labs a week, which ended up making the lab period be pretty rushed and still being 5 hours long. We even skipped the usual safety lecture/check-in only for the first week and just did the two first labs. This semester in ochem 2 lab, it's been two weeks, and we haven't done anything yet (first week was just safety lecture/check-in, second was labor day). So the lab is definitely harder in the summer, but I think the lecture is easier because you can focus on it. (...well mostly, I was also taking bio 2).

Probably a matter of opinion a lot of the time. A lot more goes into our need for creating schedules the way we do than just trying to be all puuurrrty for a damn admissions committee.

I'm obviously not pre-dental, but I took trig/algebra-based physics - both I and II - over this last summer.
