Hey,

I just got admitted to Pitt off the waitlist last week, but missed the orientation. Could someone kindly tell me what r the important stuff that I missed? I'm very concerned about housing and I'm wondering if you guys were given any useful information regarding that. Please pm or respond here. Thanks!!!:luck:

That's our facebook group. You'll probably get better information from there.

But this orientation was optional so nothing too important (presentations on navy/army scholarships, reasearch, health insurance, counseling, etc).

Mostly people used it to meet their classmates and look for housing. Housing is a pain if you're not from the area hahah

Have fun at Pitt this year guys. Great school!! 😀

Thanks. I don't use facebook due to personal reasons. Is there any other resource I could use? Anyway, I'll do some research myself. Do most ppl find their own housing or just live in dorms? I was a bit confused by the roommate matching form that came in my acceptance package - is that form used to match me up with a roommate? You're scaring me a bit by saying housing is a pain haha.🙁

I don't think any Pitt dental students do dorms, but I could be wrong. Although I am not going to Pitt anymore, I can say that housing is NOT bad from attending there for undergrad. If you live anywhere in Oakland or North Oakland, you can walk to class or take the Pitt shuttles (the 10A will be your best friend). Your rent should be cheap too.

The next best places to live are Shadyside or Squirrel Hill. They are not walkable but are serviced by numerous busses. A few people probably live in the southside slopes/southside, but that is more for Dusquene students (less frequent buses). All of these areas are about a 15-20 minute bus ride. Shadyside is especially popular I would imagine due to the small town feel, easy parking, and lots of apartment buildings.

In Pittsburgh really your rent should be no more than $500-600 and any area you are living should be safe to park a car and safe to walk, even at night. I lived in the Hill District (a "bad area") and came to love it. Some people would call that rough parts. Other cities would make that look like Disney world.

Don't despair over housing. You will love the city when you arrive 🙂
