Quick question:

If a resident is a PL 8 (pediatrics) what does that mean? What about PGY#?

What do these abbreviations mean :confused::confused:

Thanks.

not sure about the PL but I'm fairly certain that PGY stands for post graduate year and the # is the year

ex PGY1 would be post graduate year 1

Yup. PGY= R, also. (R= resident). PGY 1 is also intern year.

Never heard of PL, where was it?

PL is pediatric level and is our term for our training, just like anesthesia uses CA for it's training post-internship. PGY is the more general term. The linked thread has a mildly entertaining description of the difference and origin of the terms. Since pediatric training is 3 years, then beyond 3 years would go into fellowships. Since essentially all fellowships are 3 years and even allowing for a chief resident year, it would be hard to exceed PL-7 as a true training year in pediatrics. Of course, if you continue with the pedi terminology in other fields it's possible.

Maybe PL is pre-lim? or post-lim? or something. The resident list was posted where I shadow and they were all PL 3-8s.

EDIT: Never mind. There was only one PL-8. Maybe he was doing something special...

Thanks OBP :)

Maybe a second fellowship?

Would a pediatric surgeon use PL-terminology?
