I think externships and preceptorships are done in an academic setting where teaching is involved like a university, u are required to participate in seminars and a few case discussions with the residents and they award you a certificate. Where as observerships can be done in non academic settings where there is no protocol. So you may not be allowed to treat observerships as equivalent to externship.

No, observership is NOT the same as externship.
