Hi folks! Been going back and forth on this for weeks now and I have two days left to decide. Would really appreciate some advice! Side note, I am from CA and I am interested in Internal Medicine and EM

Touro NV
Pros
  • location/closer to home
  • many placements in CA
  • 3rd year rotations within 40 minutes
Cons
  • expanded class size and UNLV opening = difficulty getting core rotations
  • most place in FM
  • not a good impression of faculty = potential lack of support down the line
  • lower board pass rates, potentially scores too
  • don't disclose rotation sites. discovered that many core rotations are with a private doctor rather than with affiliations with hospitals

KCU
Pros
  • more established & transparent
  • better board scores/board pass rates
  • impressive match list in many specialties
  • nicer campus
  • chance of rotating in CA (slim chance cuz limited spots)
Cons
  • far from home
  • bigger class size
  • less placements in CA and more in the midwest
  • grade depends on a curve

Also, dont know if this is true, but I've seen that it does not matter where you go to school if it's a DO school and rotation coordinators for certain programs won't even look at your app/consider you less if they are not as familiar with your school. Is it true that PDs prefer DO schools that are regionally close rather than more established?

I am on KCU's WL (disclaimer), but I will not try to influence your decision that way. Based on my research and conversations with DO physicians, it does appear that DO programs have a strong regional component. Where is your support system? Did you prefer one of the programs over the other?

very best of luck to you!! :)
my family is in CA, but my bf will be moving with me. I don't really have a preference of being too close to family or not. I feel like I prefer KCU because it seems to be a better education and the faculty gave me a much better and more professional impression, but I am afraid that it will be too difficult to come back to CA despite it having the better education and training :/

Thank you! I am just praying and hoping for the best :) It sounds like matching back to CA is important to you. You also want to end up at a school that is a good fit for you, as you will be there for four years. Ultimately, I hope that you end up at the right medical school for you :)

My vote is for KCU as your listed cons for Touro is not a good impression for faculty and low pass rates. KCU has great pass rates, really good placement and a solid reputation that will help boost you to better placement with whatever changes step 1 being pass/fail will bring. That would give you a better chance of matching anywhere. I also think KCU draws a lot of people from the Midwest to the school so that could cause more placement in the Midwest. Plus the campus is beautiful and continuing to grow. The students I talked to there seemed really happy with faculty, as well. Best of luck deciding!

thank you for this =) Yeah I really want to want to choose NV bc of the location, but they're making it really hard for me to love them haha. Also the expanding class size...heard some classes were held in CASINOS bc they didnt even have the space! I didnt have the chance to see KCU bc virtual interview, but it sounds like a beautiful campus. Thanks for your input!! That helps :D
