  1. Pre-Medical
I am currently applying to medical school but was thinking that if I don't get in this year that I will apply to podiatry school next year.
My question is whether or not I need any significant shadowing experience of a podiatrist or whether or not shadowing doctors and having lots of volunteer experience is good enough. Also I don't know average grades or MCAT for schools...but here are my stats

32 MCAT (10ps,11vr,11bs)
3.75 science GPA
3.77 overall GPA
shadowed primary care physician (50hrs)
Worked in ER (50hrs)
volunteered in Outpatient treatment (75 hrs)
volunteer working with developmentally disabled children
member of 2 clubs
Teaching assistant
worked in several 1-2 day community volunteer activities
worked in jobs every summer of undergrad including working in a lab one summer
Avid golfer
Play guitar in a "band" (kinda a jokeof a band...but i enjoy playing)

Please tell me what my chances are for being accepted into ANY podiatry school.

Ur stats are great and Im sure you will get into an allopathic school. As far as podiatry, your stats are very impressive. But I would have to say that you first shadow a pod before you make the decision of applying to pod school.

I am going to use the laws of probability and say if you do not apply the probability is 0. If you do apply the probability is 0.5. You either will or you wont get in. Be sure to include stories about groupies in your PS.

Establish residency in my state (SC) and you will get in MD school. Both of them. Pod schools will accept you! You are way above their stats.

I wish I had that MCAT!!!

MD schools are getting ridiculously difficult to get in nowadays, but I'm sure with your stats you'll succeed. If not, there's always DO school...or the Carri beans =)
I agree with the other posts, though. You really should shadow a podiatrist first to see if you like dealing with feet...even though you'll never really know until you get there. I was pre-med for the longest time and had no idea what specialty I wanted to enter until I stumbled into a podiatrist performing a foot surgery. One thing led to another and alakazam! I turned into a pre-pod student.

I can't believe I'm the first to say this: There is a huge chance that you will not like podiatry if your using it as a backup. There are other options for you if you don't get into an MD school.

Podiatry is different. If you never shadow a podiatrist, you'll never know the difference until your here and spent money on applications, interviews, and deposits.

From what I understand, it would be wiser to apply for at least 2 MD cycles, correct?

i agree with maserati! pods are a different breed. consider DO before podiatry if you haven't experienced the profession yet. with your credentials, i believe you will get accepted to MD/DO school with ease. unless your personality doesn't match well with your stats when you get interviewed. good luck

I disagree. If we are all honest with ourselves, most podiatry applicants did not say as children they wanted to be foot and ankle specialists. But due to whatever circumstances, this is where we find ourselves, and as long as we are happy with that decision and have the motivation and desire to succeed, we are thrilled to be able to become doctors within this field. But to act like no prepods ever thought about going to MD or DO school first is ridiculous.

I would say don't go into your interview with an attitude that you are better than podiatry and don't say out loud that you are using it as a backup. I think all nine schools will be fighting over you, just like they do with anyone over a 20 MCAT.

I disagree with your disagreement.

I understand what you are saying. I had NEVER thought of podiatry when I was a 1st/2nd year undergrad. I thought that we were allied health professionals.

We all get to this point by different means. I'm the number one proponent for that thought. I was accepted to DO schools. But, to say: "I'm ONLY applying to podiatry schools AFTER I'm rejected from allopathic programs on the first cycle" is using podiatry as a backup.

Here's why I personally think using podiatry as a backup is bad:

A. Like I said before, a lot of people don't know what we can do. If your heart isn't into podiatry, you won't be a necessary voice that the profession needs.

B. We all know that it IS a little easier to be accepted to some schools, and when you compare that to some allopathic programs, feelings of paucity are bound to be roused.

I believe it's naive to think that using podiatry as an obvious backup is good for the profession, no matter the academic stats of the applicant.

To the OP: You need to shadow pods in your area. Find out if this is something you can do everyday. Look at all of the aspects of the career. If the shoe fits, (pun intended), then go for it. If it doesn't, there are options for you out there that will still lead you to becoming an allopathic/osteopathic physician. GL.

Some POD schools will not accept you without at least scopring out a POD clinic, regardless of stats. It states this on the school website links.
