Hello guys
I need some one to tell me how to prepare my self to get a student loan for the whole tuition including living expenses.
Does federal loan pay the whole tuition including living cost for NYU? If not what are my options
Do i need to get the rest of the tuition and living expenses in private loan?
Do i need a cosigner? or do i have to have a good credit
Those who has applied for the federal loan to pay the tuition including living expenses to go to NYU or any other university's please guide me through it .
I am so confused . I thought us citizen wouldn't have to go through all these problems for student loan.

thank you all and good luck

You will probably need federal subsidized/unsubsidized and plus loan. This should take care of tuition and living. If not private loan is the way to go.

Maybe

Do i need a cosigner? or do i have to have a good credit
If you are citizen or permanent resident, probably not. Yes it helps to have good credit. If not, better to get cosigner. Also adding a cosigner may get you better rates.

I am not the right person to answer this question. I dont qualify for Federal loans.

What problems dude? From this wording of this question I take you are a citizen. At the worst this is an long process w/ too much paper work.

Problem= visa holders (F,H,L etc series) who can't get a loan on their own, who don't have a cosigner. Now, that is a REAL problem.

I am sorry for being so rude but really! I would be counting my blessings if I could get federal aid or loan w/out cosigner.

thank you all and good luck
Good luck to you also.

Come on you guys 69 people visited this thread but no reply
Thanks to LA Fea again
I know there are so many of you guys are concerning about how to cover living expenses as of federal loan does not cover.
so please lets find out how we can solve this problem as it will catch on with you at one point.
Those who knows any thing at all please post it here

THANK YOU ALL AGAIN.

I agree with La fea.
You get federal subsidized/unsubsidized depending on ur household annual income and graduate plus loans too. Your school's financial aid office is the best place to start as they guide you thr' the whole process. If the fed loans don't cover ur tuition+living, then ur school directs u to a private lender or a list of lenders as the case may be.
You should truely feel blessed for not having to worry about a co-signor when there are so many giving up their seats for the lack of one. IMO, stop cribbing and get to research on ur school's criteria, as different schools have diff. deadlines to fill out FAFSA (application for fed. loans).

Hey Sherry,

I have applied for FAFSA as well for NYU.I talked to NYU financial people and they said federal will most probably cover tuition and living expenses as well depending upon your eligibility and credit report.

So i dont think should bea problem but as La fea said it is time consuming and so lets see.
And yeah private loans ,you can get without a co signer as well .but ya the interest rates vary without a cosigner .

Hope it helps and its time consuming for real.............Hating it right now.Still waiting for my award letter to arrive.

Good luck anyways and keep me posted!👍👍

My wife took federal loans last year. She was approved for $8,500 Subsidized, $38,600 Unsubsidized and $36,000 Grad. Plus loans.

After school took out tuition and fees, she got two checks: $11,000 in August and $10,000 in February. That was the money she could use for living expenses (as I was working that time, we chose to payback part of her Grad. Plus loan).

One issue with these checks: we got first check only in August, so if it happens to you, you will need some money to "survive" from June till mid August

Its the one application. Subsidized or unsubsidized loan awards depends on parental/spousal income.

Does that answer your question?

Hello Dear friends
I just found out that i got accepted to NYU
I don't know if i should be happy or what.
First of all I am a foreign trained dentist and also I am a us citizen
few years back i had to go to an emergency room and i have some outstanding bills for that.
If you know tuition and living expenses for NYU are almost 100k a year
With federal loan we can only be qualified almost $38000.00 i think
grad plus loan as well as private student loan required credit ck which i have problem with; because i have a outstanding bill which i have not paid for the emergency room other than that i have a very good credit.
Now comes my question
1:How should i face this situation and solve it since i don't have a cosigner
2: Do u know any body facing same situation
3: is there any way out
please all your inputs will help me and others a whole bunch

I thank you all in advance for reading this thread may be some one can show me a light.

Hey Dr Bro,

Congrats first of all on your acceptance!

I Think if you have a good credit.than i dont think so it should be a problem coz i think all they need is a good credit report.I am not an expert on all these issues,......But i think shouldn't be a problem.

Good luck and i am sure there will more exp people out here to help you out.👍👍

Maybe you should get a credit report w/ credit score and see what exactly is happening w/ your credit. Get credit education from some one who knows about these things.

Hi,
Has anybody applied for the federal loans for nyu.I called the financial aid office today and they said they havent mailed the financial award letter and will be doing so in 2 weeks. My concern is can you apply for federal loans at various banks without the financial aid reward letter.Or do we have to apply through the school ? I have already filed the fafsa and nyu has recieved it.But feel like im stuck right now.Can anybody guide me what to do now?

You do not need to look for loans from various banks. NYU works with "New York State Higher Education Services Corp. (HESC)" (if I remember correctly - my wife is at NYU and she filled papers last year). As you will get award letter, you will also be instructed how to apply for loans and how to fill e-MPN (electronic Master Promissory Note). After you sign all paperwork, you will be ok. You will get Stafford (subsidized and unsubsidized - 6.8% interest) and Grad Plus (8.5% interest) loans.

Hi Kalvydas,
Are u also applying for federal loans? Did u get the award from nyu yet? I haven't received the letter till now and am starting to get worried because the tuition is due on may 1st.Do u have any idea how long does it take for the whole process.
Your reply will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Yes, I filled FAFSA to get federal loans. I didn't get any award letter yet. Based on my wife's last year experience, we should get award letter end of April - beginning of May.

My wife had same experience last year, she got bill in April and didn't get award letter till beginning of May. She was scared being late and as she called NYU to ask what to do, the answer was: "If you filled FAFSA, you just need to wait for award letter and instructions how to get federal loans". As for due date - this date is students who are getting private loans.

I think it is time to bring this thread back to life. Any folks accepted in NYU who have applied FASFA, please post here and let us discuss this matter in details.

I am also sailing in the same boat.. Which one is better for permanent resident?? Fafsa or private loan because grad plus loan of FAFSA has interest rate of 7.9% while private loan has 4 to 5%. So anyone who is US citizen or PR, which option is better to go with??

Hey thanks for posting. Even though grad plus interest rates may be higher- these are fixed rates unlike the variable rates you get with private loan. Other benefit of federal include tax write offs after you start earning and not to mention deferment and so on. The question is can you get grad plus loans if credit is less than perfect? Any inputs here are appreciated.
