Greetings everyone,

please impart your wisdom to the following situation:

I'm trying to figure out where to rank my prelim med program amongst my list of advanced and categorical PM&R programs. I don't have a preference between adv or categorical. Rather, the institution/location are more important factors to me. On the other hand, I am interested in and plan to rank only 1 prelim med program for my intern year (close proximity to home, not a heavily desired area, non-competitve, but I really liked the team while I rotated with them). So my chances of matching to it is relatively high.

As for PM&R, needless to say, I don't know where I'll match so I'm planning to rank both advanced and categorical programs. I just don't know how to rank the prelim med with respect to both my liking of adv. and categorical...
For example:

If my ROL
1. AAA (advanced)
2. BBB (categorical)
3. CCC (advanced)
4. DDD (categorical)
5. EEE (advanced)
6. FFF (advanced)
7. GGG (categorical)
If I rank prelim-med as #2 and match to it but match to DDD (categorical) for PM&R, what happens to the prelim spot? Does it cancel out? In a different scenario, if I match were to FFF (my 6th PM&R choice), where should I rank my prelim-med program? I guess my ultimate confusion is not knowing where to place my one and only prelim program amongst a list of both adv and categorical PM&R programs. Please help!

I would look back over the NRMP page, I think you're misunderstanding the ROL a bit. You probably shouldn't rank your prelim program on your primary list (or if you do, not until the end). For each of the advanced spots, you have a secondary list where you rank prelim/transition years. If your prelim program is in your primary rank list, you run the risk of matching just there (no PM&R spot, just PGY1).

The prelim programs go on a completely separate list from the PM&R programs. That list is called the "supplemental list", whereas the PM&R programs go on the "primary rank order list". You will see a drop-down box at the top of the page where you can choose between the primary list and the supplemental list, and for each of these lists, you rank the corresponding programs in order.

For each PM&R program that is advanced, you will have to attach the corresponding supplemental list which has all your prelim programs on it.

So your ROL list will look like this:

1. AAA (advanced) Supplemental list
2. BBB (categorical)
3. CCC (advanced) Supplemental list
4. DDD (categorical)
5. EEE (advanced) Supplemental list
6. FFF (advanced) Supplemental list
7. GGG (categorical)

Hope that makes sense.

BTW, do you really only have 1 prelim program that you interviewed at? This is a bit risky if you happen to match to an advanced PM&R program, because what if you do not match for prelim year? Then you will be stuck without an intern year.
I recommend that you put your categorical programs above the advanced programs so that you will more likely get a categorical position and you won't have to worry about the prelim program. It's up to you, but again, having only 1 prelim program is risky if you end up in an advanced PM&R spot.

Excellent job explaining . And to further explain this for your supplemental lists, you personally will only have 1 program listed for each supplemental list. Most people will have several and can arrange them in different orders for each advanced program.

AAA could have lists of 111-222-333-444 for internships, while CCC could go 222-444-333-111, and EEE could just go 222-111

Ah,
Thanks for the explanation everyone!! I really appreciate it.

Wait a minute...

Now, I'm confused after PMR 4 MSK

So, my top 3 are advanced, and my fourth is categorical.

As of now, my rank looks like this:

1. PMR #1 (Supplemental list A)
2. PMR #2 (Supplemental list A)
3. PMR #3 (Supplemental list A)
4. PMR #4
5. PMR #4 (Supplemental list A)

With Supplemental list A being an entire rank list of prelim spots.

Is that wrong?

Edit: I see. You said one rank on the supplemental list because OP said her supplemental list was only one rank deep. Nevermind. Sorry guys.

Try to only move once. Doing internal medicine can't hurt as it will help you manage complex medical issues on rehab unit
