Hi Everyone,

I'm originally from Europe and hope to move back in the future. I'm still an undergrad and will be applying for fall 2008 admission to podiatry programs this september. I was wondering if anyone knows about podiatry as a profession in europe? in checking it out online I saw that podiatrist in england only make about 19,000-25,000 sterling a year!! this seems very low to me and its making me worry about being able to move back as a podiatrist and make a good living.

any comments would be appreciated!
thanks!

In England podiatrist are not doctors nor are they called podiatrist, they are chiropodists. I'm not sure about each country in Europe but the DPM is unique to American similar to the DO, DC, OD, ect. Most of the world it is MD only.

Not true. Most are now doing what the rest of the world does and call themselves Podiatrists. The 'chiropody' term is being phased out.

The International Federation of Podiatrists is at http://www.fipnet.org/

Hi! Would you know what kind of training they go through? Is it equivalent to what the US has? I'm interested in doing a clerkship in Italy because I see from your website that there are Podiatrists there and I would love to go back there. DMU has an International Club that may provide opprotunities to go there as a pod student. My fingers are crossed for that opportunity.

While I agree that the term is being phased out, they are chiropodists in every sense of the word. They are not DPMs. Most of the world has BSc programs in podiatry.

This is the UK NHS website, the professsion is still listed as a chiropodist. I personally don't want them to be known as "podiatrist" unless they are going to have equivalent training b/c it lessens what we do. Also, most podiatry schools are in alternative medicine schools in the UK. You can check out the school websites at http://www.epodiatry.com/education.htm.

You may be able to go and train there, plenty of pods do fellowships in Europe, but I do not know if you can live there and expect to be a surgeon. As I said before, the degree of DPM is unique to America. Check out the link above to see podiatry/chiropody programs from around the world.
