Podiatry School Response

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm going to Western U and so far nothing.

While it might be the responsible thing to do, It's hardly in the best interest of their profits.

I was also wondering/hoping this would happen. However it isn't reasonable to expect them to.

1. Non-sdn prepods don't know about the crisis, so an email from our deans will freak them out

2. I believe that the schools believe the crisis will be solved by 2017

3. clearly the administration has bigger fish to fry right now than to send emails to students that haven't started yet

Any hope?

Yes, there is a residency shortage. Don't call it a crisis- I don't know the stats but I'm sure theres a larger percentage of MD grads struggling for residency programs as well.

The podiatrist I still shadow every once in a while said when he thinks it will be resolved by 2017. He didn't sound very confident when he said it though, so who knows. Our best chance is to work out butts off and stand out during these next four years. Through our GPA and building the right relationships with the right people. I honestly think us SDNers have an advantage from the get go. We know the current situation and how important it is to be on top of our game at all time.

You don't know the stats, yet you're sure that MDs have a worse placement rate???

1. They don't.

2. DPMs can't practice without residency.

3. Suggesting that because someone is worse off means you are all peachy is unenlightened. You are basically saying the genocide in Darfur is okay because the holocaust was worse. Where is logic in that?

I looked at the 2013 match data for Allo/Osteo. At least to me the US allos are unaffected at this point. But DOs are already feeling the crunch.

There are still unfilled family med positions every year after the match, but just no body wants to go, especially considering that med school tuition is a lot more expensive. The general consensus is that the MD/DOs will feel the residency crunch by 2016 due to a bunch of newly established schools, that's a guranteed fact, unless the GME funding increases.

But I agree that MD/DOs have more options than us if left unmatched, but many wouldn't be happy with those options either Personally I would rather take the risk and choose podiatry to do something that I love instead of taking a family med residency to just practice. Life is not about compromises. And everyone is complaining right now in medicine. It's just no longer a safe haven.

But that's just my thoughts. Anyway, the glorious days of medicine are over.

which is really a shame, considering the massive shortage of physicians we will have, esp. in FM

You know, I really think the shortage thing is inflated. The newly trained doctors won't even considering going into FM due to massive debt loads. And I believe NPs and PAs will take over FM over the years to fill in the gap. So then the MD/DOs will be scrambling for other specialties that don't have enought spots. It can take some time for this to happen, but it will happen.

The difference is that DOs actually have somewhere to go if they don't match (FM). Do pods have anything like that? Hell friggin NO.

Then don't go to pod school if you aren't comfortable with the resedency situation! Problem solved!

I believe I did ackknowledge that fact in my last two paragraphs. Ranting isn't going to help. Like I said in another thread, if you just want to be a "doctor" and practice, then go MD/DO. You won't be guranteed anything in any field. The old days of "choose medicine and you will be guranteed a six figure salary with great life-style" is becoming less and less likely. Know what you really want.

What if you can't get into DO school so you view pod as a good alternative?

If admission standards were your concern, and you really want to be a doctor but don't know what specialty to decide on yet, then go DO, apply early and maybe take a year or two off to boost your application.

If you have shadowed pods and really want to commit to this career, then go DPM. Yes sure there are more uncertainties in the profession than MD/DOs, but you like it, go for it. Like plenty of students still go to law school despite the fact that they know they won't be guranteed a high paying job. But the situation in pod is certainly better than law, and better than other health fields (optometry, pharmacy and vet).

The choice is yours, just don't regret it years later. 🙂

Eh, you may be right, but i'm not convinced at this point. FMs actually do just fine and I think the debt/income thing for them is inflated. Most FMs do better than podiatrists on average, I believe. NPs/PAs will definitely have more of a role in FM, but I honestly hope we do not allow them to replace the primary care physician. It makes more sense to set up bridge programs for NP/PA/DPM/optometrists/pharmacists than anything else, imo. Should be interesting.

I agree overall they are still good now, but it's just getting tougher. I know someone personally at U Iowa Medical Center who is working as a hospitalist family physician, salary is $120k+benefits (pre-tax). And this package is pretty common. Pretty good deal, but not as good as those in private practice. And more young physicians are "bought" by HMOs these days. It's gonna take time for things to change for sure, not sure how long, but medicine will never be the same again.

Maybe it's time for podiatrists to take over physicals, and then we can look at their feet as well 😀

I am sure you know this but just wanted to make sure. But DO schools have grade replacement. And with a lot of DO schools opening up, all the newer DO schools dont have a very high MCAT score mid to high 20's. If anyone wants DO it isn't impossible.
