Today in the OR during the last case, I was closing the incision, and the scrub tech and I were talking. She told me that after the case she was going to work with Dr. S who is a podiatrist out in the community. There is also an orthopedic foot and ankle guy that is an attending on staff at a big name academic center, who also operates at the same hospital. When Dr. S is operating and the orthopod has surgical cases, Dr. S orders the nurses to cover the windows of the OR so the orthopod can't watch the surgery and "steal" Dr. S secrets techniques. The first thing that pop into my head was "podiatry secrets?" In addition, I was surprised to hear this since most training programs utilize both doctors for foot and ankle training; that is the orthopod learns from the podiatrist and the podiatrist learns from the orthopod. The only conclusion I can come up with is that Dr. S is an old timer or an extremely paranoid individual.
