Depends what the gov would be getting out of the deal.
no crap.

a general question like "Would you like your student loans to be paid off?" leaves off the very obvious question of "What's the catch?"

everyone wants to be debt free. it's what it costs to become debt free that will cause people to be concerned

well most of the voters in the poll seem to be willing to write-off their souls, no questions asked.

umm, for going into specific specialties?

there's a catch somewhere. the government would never reward you just for doing what you want to do.
 never ever ever ever... it's all about "what YOU can do for YOUR country", right?

id support an increased tax on the highest paid specialties to subsidize the cost of medical school for people going into primary care

Whoa whoa whoa. Why would the government pay for my debt when they can just regulate how much colleges charge for Medical schooling? And if they can't regulate private colleges, they can make public colleges cheap enough to where the private's have to lower costs to compete (kind've like what they want to do to health insurance). That would be a much more effective way than just taking tax cheddar and spending it to put a specific group of people (med-students) through school. Plus, I could imagine a lot of hate coming towards Dr's if they got free schooling. And a lot more people wanting to become Dr's. This just sounds like a horrible idea in general, I mean sure the indebtedness is ridiculous. But at the same time you rarely see a poor Doctor who has been practicing for 10-20 years. Dr's are compensated well when they finish residency, and even though as students it's an astronomical expense, it will all be worth it when we make six figures almost guaranteed as practicing physicians.

The problem with that is that there are more premeds than medical school spots. Private schools could have 10x what public schools charge and they'd still have applicants, just look at the number of people who go to the carib even with the high attrition rates.

The public schools will get the better applicants though, and in that case the private schools will need to become competitive. If they don't they will become lower-tiered schools. The carribean gets the students who do not have the statistics. I mean, if you're going to have the government pay for med-school every school can raise it's price dramatically and people will still go. There has to be some type of restriction put in place. Debt sucks, but making $150,000 a year almost guaranteed is awesome. Saving lives is awesome. Wearing lab coats is awesome. Having an MD/DO (more so the MD) behind your name is awesome. I personally think it makes up for spending 200,000-300,000 on an education. That is why I chose this career pathway. If you don't want to go into debt don't go to college. Or become a stripper and have the strip-club pay your way thru school.

Why do you people want the feds paying for your debt? Do that and they own you.

The only time I'll accept them paying for my debt is if they've already strong-armed me into becoming a public employee, then I'll demand they pay my debt.

The only time the Govt should, and does, repay your debt is if you work for them. Grad students from other programs do not get their student loans repaid by the govt (and yes, some of them do come out with massive debt). Also, Grad students from other programs rarely go on to make wages similar to doctors (and I'm talking low end of the stick, generally not even comparable to primary care wages). So maybe we should whine for them instead?

I'm getting really tired of hearing how much more doctors should get paid and how much less school should cost. What else do you want on your entitled silver platter?

+pity+

Why should they pay your debt when you're not really doing anything for them other than being a working American citizen? No other working American citizens have the school loan debts repaid by the Govt just because they are working American citizens.

And for the record, you wouldn't be owned. As of right now, If you are a Federal employee involved in direct patient care services, you are eligible for up to 60K....that's 10K over 6 years. Work for them for 6 years and get 60K, taken off you debt and then jam (though I doubt you would in the end because you would see that being a federal employee is the SHIZZZ). And no, you don't have to work a year before being eligible....in fact, you have to have your application submitted within 4 months of hire. Pretty damn good if you ask me.

Of course not. I made a conscious choice to go to medical school so the debt is mine to pay and no one elses.

yes, on the condition that they work in specified underserved communities, like medical students enter some sort of contract with the government that their loans will be payed if they serve

otherwise, no..

wrong.

here this includes working for a major regional hospital, one of the handful that make up a VISN, a group of 4-5 states. Patient care services is anything involving patient care. you could be primary care, er, surgeon, patho, opto, derm, internal, psych, etc.

maybe you'd have less debt if you weren't so close minded. 😕

Not trying to flame but..

Given the parameters of the question.. It is kind of stupid one...

"Hmmmm Come out of medical school 200k in debt, or be debt free... Hmmmmmm. This is a tough choice!!''

???? So v3ry confused
