Possible C in Physics Senior Year-will it kill my chances?

So I'm graduating this semester and am currently taking physics. I got a B first semester and am in danger of getting a C this semester. If I get a C I will get around a 3.47 GPA. I am taking the MCAT July 6th and am applying this cycle. I have had a decent upward trend, but obviously a C in physics would end that. Is there any hope?

You're not the first and certainly not the last person to apply with a Physics (or anatomy and physiology, or organic chem, or immunology, or...) grade of C. 3.47 isn't bad. Stop freaking out.

C in physics? Omg..why did it have to be physics? I mean, if it was in orgo or maybe even genetics youd still have a chance. But physics is the single most important premed class for DO schools. Getting a C in it means you have zero chance of getting it. You need at least an A-. I suggest quitting your dream and pursuing lawn care.

I heard that some lawn care programs make it hard for you to specialize in shrubbery. Is that true?

Very true. God forbid you want to do creative, bush sculptures; only advanced lawn care residency placement programs can get you into that. There's people that do basically the same job though, but have a slightly different name title and these people are definitely inferior. Remember, in the real world, names are everything and if you don't go to harvard school of lawn care you should give up.

And family lawn care..don't get me started on those people.

OP, seriously finish the best you can. Review Physics heavily before the MCAT and identify your weak areas and you will be fine. Do not, I repeat do not freak out over this. There will be times in Medical School when you might even fail a class and have to repeat. Relax take a deep breath and go after it again in that scenario, in this one relax, take a deep breath and keep moving forward. This is a road of hurdles and sharp curves but stay on the road and you will be successful in the end.

My GPA in physics (I and II) was 1.84. I once told an admission director that I'd make a fantastic physician as long as I didnt A) go into radiology or B) attempt to predict when a patient that jumped out of a 15th floor hospital window will hit the ground and cease to be my patient.

He laughed very hard at that. And apparently gave me a rave review to the admission staff. Though I didnt get it. (I did get a personal letter from him stating his disappointment that they couldnt see past the low GPA). I should add that even though I didnt get in there, I had plenty of schools to choose from.

Interesting. I thought you were a stats guy though? I know, math =/= physics but I found that so long as you had a moderate aptitude physics wasn't *that* bad. No offense meant, just curious. I didn't ace them either FWIW.

I friggen love stats. Hate calculus. Calc based physics was the oly choice.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement. I wasn't so much worried about getting a C, just the fact that it happened in the second semester of my senior year, right before I apply to med school. I guess we'll see how it goes!

ColeSmalls, I'm digging the sarcasm. This thread turned from a basic question to being most informative. I always wanted the particulars on specializing in shrubbery.

It's hard not to be a little discouraged about that, plus the fact that I'm taking the MCAT July 6th so my app won't be in until the beginning of August. Oh well, I just have to do well on the MCAT, then apply and find out what happens.

Don't worry about it. 3.47 is close to the average at many DO schools, and with a good MCAT score you should have a very good chance. Just put all your effort into MCAT studying now, and also you should submit your application asap after you take the test so hopefully it will be almost verified by the time you get your score. Then use this site to figure out what all the secondary prompts are so you can work on them and submit all the materials as soon as they send them to you.

Hahaha.... I also received a C+ in PHY 2. I am horrible at physics. I cannot visually manipulate equations just by looking at it. It is not the end of the world. To add insult to injury, it was the class that derailed my 4.0 GPA I maintained until my Junior year. Life goes on. If you wan't it bad enough, a C+ will not stop your ambitions.
Good luck OP. Study, study and study some more for the MCAT.

Have you considered submitting your AACOMAS and AMCAS earlier if only to just one program to get you started on verification? Just a thought. The C+ will not kill your chances, so don't sweat it. Learn from it and move on. Good luck.

Seriously just relax. I got a C- in Evolution and a C+ in Orgo II and I got in. Just go kill it on the MCAT and get you application in June first to get the process started. Of course my degree in laboratory lawn care helped I think.......

Same here. Got a few Cs and I got in. I don't understand why so many pre-meds are so quick to think they have no chance in these situations. Sounds like someone who has been talking way too much to their pre-med advisor(s). That's a whole other discussion...

It's no laughing matter, though. Lawn care specialists are being encroached upon by mid-level gardeners who don't receive nearly as much training in soil science and Mendelian genetics.

OMG +1.

One of my friends said she came out of her pre med advisor's office before applying and was told she should apply to just the carribean with a 3.4/29 (??!?!). This was at a very competitive pre med program. She ended up getting into 4 MDs.

On the other hand, the pre med advisor at my school tends to just recommend the bare minimum. I have never gone to him but from the advice i've heard, he seems to describe requirements to be a decent applicant for carribean/do. I've heard he's too optimistic and sometime isn't realistic with his students. Seems like a likeable guy but I know of an adcom that I talk to for advice. He's very realistic and said my current grades would not have a good shot at getting into his MD school but he said I could get into DOs possibly with a decent MCAT (27+).

Adcom's advice(s) > pre med advisors
