Post-Acceptance Motivation (or lack thereof)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I can't withdraw anymore as the deadline passed. The only way would be to appeal to the L&S committee. I did and they said no, so I'm just not going to class anymore.

Oh I see. :/ I originally was going to take 14 hours of class (after graduating) at my hometown college, but decided against it. I'm glad I did ^_^ I'm only taking one class hehe.

God this is exactly how I feel. I lost all motivation for the semester once I got accepted. Right now I have mid to high B's in my classes but even if I end with all B's my GPA will still be 3.8ish so I really don't care. I haven't had a summer off for 3 years and just can't wait to be done with classes. Only 3 more weeks!

Latest DGAF update: skipped a week of biochemistry cause 10 am is way too early.

LOL. I have biochem at 8am and haven't missed a class yet. You're making me want to ditch though haha

I remember the first time I skipped a class. Glorious indeed.

I felt extremely guilty the first time I did. I went to my teacher's office to explain myself and then asked him what he covered in class.

skipped today... slept till 11am... haven't done that in 2 years. But I have A's in all classes so it didn't even bother me, YAY!

Love hearing about ppl skip classes for the first time. n00bz!

Noobs indeed. I haven't gone to a full day of school since I was accepted. (It should be easy because on tuesday I only have the one class) Even before I was accepted, if I didn't need to be there for an A then I wasn't.

:meanie:

In one of my classes I think I skipped about 10 times before the whole heart thing.

Damn, I have never apologized for missing a class unless it was unintentional.

Feeling sick the night before + setting your alarm to 12 hours later (on accident or not paying attention) would do it

I thought I set it to 6:30 AM, but turns out it was set on 6:30 PM and I didn't notice until that morning. I decided not to rely on my phone alarms anymore and used alarm clocks with radios a lot more.

That's not really "ditching class" though.:meanie:

I have definitely not checked out yet.

Ochem II has been ridiculous, we got a new professor and the exam grading has been pretty rough (forgetting a proton or a small mistake = complete loss of points on the problem + 50% of the exam being this way = ouch) Thankfully my quiz scores are saving me and I have a B overall. I just don't want to suddenly falter and lose my pharmacy school acceptance. Biochem is pretty crazy too. They put a graduate level biochem professor into the 380 and the B cut off is a 70% (due to exam scores). Everything else is going great though, just those two classes I have B's in but I am really paranoid about.

You're doing OChem II and Biochem in the same semester?

Yep.

Biochem 380
Ochem II
Ochem II Lab (I love this class)
Anatomy and Physiology 313 (New prof here too)
Anatomy and Physiology 314 Lab
Medical Microbiology
Medical Microbiology Lab (finished already - accelerated)

Fun right? It's what it took to get me into pharmacy school so I don't regret it. I can say this is the most difficult semester I have had.

I can see why. OChem and Biochem do not belong in the same sentence.😉 Everything else looks fine.

lol I really agree with that. But hey, biochem is going to get much better, we just started genetics!

Sweet Jesus. I don't think I've ever had a semester that tough.

Not gonna lie but it hasn't been too rough except having 3 exams in the same week (this week, biochem, med micro, ochem). To get what you want, sometimes you have to sacrifice your free time lol. Glad the gf understands.

Make sure you don't forget that when you're in pharmacy school.

OK.. His is probably worse. Those classes by themselves were kicking my ass a couple of years ago.

Right now Organic is kicking my ass. I had an exam friday and the prof says "study the notes." The exam was four pages, and there was stuff on there I have never seen before or heard of. If I got below a 60% on that exam, which right now seems... likely? Then I will be sitting at a B- at the final as a worst case scenario. The exam average runs about ~68-70% and the TA says it is a fair exam with a 18-24% standard deviation. So that means 68% of the class got between a 50-86 - 44-94 percentile, doesn't that also mean ~1/3 of the class got below a 40-50%??? How does an exam like that qualify as "legitimate" more or less fair? *grumble* Right now, Ochem is the only class I don't have an A in. I keep going to the professor's office hours which has helped. Right now I am just praying to stay above that C line.

Crazy - Is there an organic chemistry equivalent in pharmacy school where there is arrow pushing and complex synthesis?

Swishers - That stuff looks very difficult. I couldn't do QA, I can barely get a decent % yield as it is now. I got a 0% yield on an experiment I did in Ochem (yet still got full points on the report???), and I really don't like recrystallizations.

Passion - It's not that bad, but I really wish I was working.

I am averaging a C- overall on 3 exams (one is dropped, but I think the most recent one I took I bombed even with 2 weeks of studying) but my quizzes are really good, I have an B+ average and they are worth 2 exams. So that puts my overall exam average in the B- range (without the curve). However, last semester I went into the final with a B+ or so and ended with a B- (final was not curved because our professor decided a 50% average was "decent"). I am trying to avoid getting a C- because I would lose my pharmacy school acceptance. Right now, Ochem is the only class I don't have an A in.

If your final grade is C-, you can look into taking it in the Summer at your University or a CC. If that happens, find out from the school you got into if this is a possibility.

Happened to me too. I think it's b/c in the report, I was like "the experiment didn't go as planned and was a failure." Boom. full credit. Stuff like that happens in the scientific realm all the time, and researcher's don't get fired.

Assuming an average of 70 and a SD of 24, 68% of the class is between 56 and 84, because 2/3 of the grades will be within one SD. And no it does not mean 1/3 got below 56. It means that 1/3 of the grades are outside one SD. It means 1/6 of the class got below a 54 and 1/6 of the class got above an 84, assuming it is evenly distributed, which classroom grades rarely are. I don't want to pick on you, but if you haven't taken statistic yet I recommend it, I guarantee you will need it in pharmacy school.

Yes, it's called Med Chem, although I hear many schools no longer have a med chem class. I am jelous.

I have taken a lot of stats classes, except the last one was 2008, so I am a little rusty. Wasn't I right though? Also there was an "~" symbol as well to account for my incapability to do math effectively at 2 am 🙄, also

Isn't 70-24 = 46?

2411t - I think this was a grignard experiment I had going, and all I can say is I kinda hope it was the first and last on I had to do! Case in point, the application and development of the term "residual water" on glassware. lol

Right you are. Sorry about that, basic arithmetic fail. The point about 1/6 of the class being below 46 stands though, assuming equal distribution. If you will allow me to make excuses, I blame the Easter Bunny.

EDIT: Next I suppose you are going to argue 70+24=94?

Hello there Owlegrad... talk nerdy to me! 😉😛😍

(Picture a nerds idea of a sexy voice) e is a mathematical constant originally derived from opening an account with one dollar at 100% interest where n the number of compound intervals is sent to infinity, i.e., compounded continuously. Jacob Bernoulli noticed that as you shorten the interval between compounding intervals you decrease the magnitude of the gain from each interval, this limit is knows as the force of interest.

Kidding aside, I really do think it is neat that the base of the natural logarithm was originally discovered by examining interest behaviour. It just goes to show that you never know what you will learn or the importance of something unless you keep an open mind.

This semester has been awesome. Haven't skipped any classes on purpose, but haven't been putting in the extra yards either. Having security definitely allows you to lower your guard and not have to fret as much when it comes to school work.

I have taken all the Judge Alex, Divorce Court, Judge Judy, The Peoples Court, and Judge Joe Brown I can handle. I think I'll be able to take the bar after this semester

I envy you guys. My finals are going to kick my rear end and my IPPE rotation starts 2 days later. I have to actually move to another city that is 4 hours away for a month. And I still have to commute 2 hours to work on weekends. I literally will not have a day off until July since IPPE is 8 hours a day like a full-time job. That means 60 hours of "work" every week for a month. And if I win the Chair Elect position for my local pharmacy org, I will be spending my first weekend "off" working at the conference from 6am - midnight for 5 days, no joke. And I have to present and talk to a bunch of people. Fml
