is a gift customary (i have limited funding) or is just a nice note acceptable etiquette? looking for your thoughts on sending thank you cards with updates for individuals you can't thank in person (location issues, etc.)...

If you can't afford a gift then there is no reason to send one...but it would be important to try to send a nice card and write something meaningful in the card...since (hopefully) the LOR writers took the time to sit down and write something meaningful about you. 🙂 There are always cheaper gifts available that can still mean a lot to the LOR writer as well.

It depends on how much they do for you. If they just write a LOR after one day of shadowing, a thank you note is really all that is necessary.

With my mentor, I shadowed him for more than 100 hours. He was very nice and helpful, and he became a good friend and colleague. He gave me lots of very helpful advice about applying, writing my PS, etc. I felt like I should give him a gift, so I got one of these:

and framed it. I gave that to him with a thank you note.
