Hello! This is my first post on the forums.

So, I’m graduating in May with a ‘BS in Management’ with a 3.72 GPA as of now. With that being said, I have wanted to become a MD for quite sometime but didn’t have the guts to actually pursue. So, I am applying to post bacc programs that are close in proximity (NJ) to fulfill the prerequisite and would love some feedback on the process. Forgive me if this has been addressed numerous times.

Does presige matter? Monmouth U offers a 1 year post bacc program that is a 15 minute drive from my house or I could try for Rutgers/NYU/Columbia which are 2 year programs.

Can I apply to medical while I’m still in the process of completing the program? Let’s say, I finish the program in the spring of 2019, can I apply during this time? If the MCAT is done already of course.

How much of an impact do post bacc grades have in comparison to undergraduate grades? Since I am a business major.

Thanks!

You don't need an expensive formal post-bac program because your GPA is excellent. Do a DIY PB at a local university to get the prereqs done. While doing this, do the requisite ECs like clinical/non-clinical volunteering, shadowing, etc., and kill the MCAT.

Thank you for the response! I appreciate it. Now, what about applying to medical school? Do all the prereqs need to be finished before applying to med school?

Nope. All prerequisites need to be completed at the time you matriculate.
One more question if you don’t mind. I know ECs are extremely important.. As a business undergrad, how should I go about shadowing/scribing/volunteering? Just apply and hope for the best? I’m sure they’ll be curious as to why a business student is applying.

All those things require a bit of legwork from your end. Since you haven't graduated, go to the science departments of your undergraduate program and seek an appointment with the pre-med advisor to ask them if they have volunteer opportunities available. Also contact your local free clinics, the volunteer offices of local hospitals, hospices, etc to see if they will allow you volunteer. Make sure you have active patient contact in these positions.

To shadow a primary care physician, contact your own/family/friends' physicians to see if they will allow you to shadow. Otherwise, start googling and cold call/email.

You can scribe by signing with a scribe company. Just google them.

You will also need non-clinical volunteering, so contact local shelters, soup kitchens, habitat for humanity, make a wish, salvation army, etc and sign up to help people less fortunate than you.

Explain to them why you want to volunteer because you have decided that you want to serve your community as a physician, etc...

Once again, thank you for your time and help. I do appreciate it.
