Ok, so I dont really have an excuse for this but in undergrad or highschool I didnt really have any extracurriculars that werent animal or vet related. When I had free time in college I would mainly go thrifting or hang out with friends. I am still very much trying to figure out who I am outside of vet med so I dont really know what extracurriculars I should look into now that im not in undergrad.

So, my question for yall is...what kinds of extracurriculars do you suggest I look into? I dont have to option to join clubs on campus anymore so I dont know what my options are.

if you have facebook, look up “(your city/area) 20’s and 30’s activity group” or something along those lines.

you can find people advertising local events like: karaoke nights, running clubs, yoga groups, cycling groups, trivia nights and so much more. check for book clubs at your local library as well! your community rec center may also offer classes or other activities geared towards adults. if you have a crafts store by you, go wander through the isles and see if anything calls to you. i’ve had plenty of times where i was bored and didn’t want to glue myself to a screen anymore so i went to my local crafts store and found little projects to do! (paint by numbers is great! and painting on little canvases)

Axe throwing league was one of my first outside of work activities I did after undergrad that wast animal related! You can be as intense or as social as you want. I was on the casual side, going to league nights to play games and brink beer lol

Also a book club with an Indy bookstore

I’ve been most active in triathlons though!! I’ve been active in a triathlon club in each city I’ve moved to and it’s been SUCH a wonderful community and a great way to stay active. Like axe throwing, you can be as competitive or social as you want. A lot of people in my club do Ironmans but there are others who are just starting their journey and are in it for the social aspect!! Highly highly recommend!

If you’re artsy, I also went to open figure drawing sessions after college. Just practicing gesture drawings (and getting free pizza lol) and that was fun even though I’m not great at art lol. A friend of mine joined a pottery class!

Just look up things you want to try! And remember you don’t have to be good at something to enjoy it!

I think people have given some good suggestions, but also…Volunteerism is a great thing and can be a “dual purpose” activity too, if you can find a group you enjoy working with. In two places I’ve lived, I’ve volunteered at adaptive horseback riding programs for people with disabilities. I am not a “people” or “kid” person, and was initially in it for the access to horses, but I absolutely loved going out there and helping participants as a side walker, horse leader, and doing barn chores. That kind of thing is animal related in some ways, but there’s a lot about it that it people-based too. My mom volunteers at a food pantry every week.

It seems like you’re looking for non-animal related activities, but if you have a dog and some money to spend, there are some great simple dog sports. Some like FastCat require minimal training, and others like barn hunt or rally obedience have classes available in a lot of places. I trained my dogs in scentwork at home with an online course. The dog sport community has good people and bad people, but I spend 1-2 weekends a month traveling to events and have made lots of friends. But also spent a lot of money haha.

I think once someone leaves college, in respect to vet schools apps. There’s a little less expectation to have a huge list of extracurricular. Just having a couple hobbies you enjoy is enough. It’s usually easy to tell, especially in an interview, when someone has a true interest/passion or if they were just doing something to check a box on an app (and that goes beyond extracurriculars, imo). Just experiment and find something you think is fun!
