Hello, I have received much advice on post-interview contact - i.e. how/what/whens of a thank you letter, letting PDs know if you are "considering them very strongly" come February, etc.

However, what should you say to a program who you plan to rank but just not at #1 or #2? You want them to remember you and to rank you as well, but you don't want to lie to them and insinuate that they are your #1 or #2.

Any advice on this would be much appreciated, thank you!

Tell them that you are "ranking them highly". Thats the best you can do.

In the end, if you don't tell them you're ranking them #1 they just disregard anything else you say though.

I agree. That's the same thing that the PDs told me. I don't think anyone actually told me they were ranking me #1.

Just don't lie. Most programs are probably going to rank you similarly whether you contact them a lot or not.

What exactly do we say to PDs/faculty/residents who contact us?
And is it always completely awkward, like some strange non-straightforward version of "I like you, do you like me?" game?!
