Hi all,

I would like to ask about combined neurology residency and research (maybe a PhD!) training.

I'm applying for the Match this year. I came across ARTS (Advanced Residency Training at Stanford) which offers a combined Neurology residency training+ PhD training (Link: http://med.stanford.edu/arts/) I find the idea very appealing!

Northwestern offers the physician scientist training program.

Apart from these two I couldn't find any other residency programs that offer combined training. Does any one know of any programs I could apply to?

The American Board of Internal Medicine offers a residency research tract through many programs (link: http://www.abim.org/certification/policies/research-pathway-policies-requirements.aspx). This is not applicable to neurology programs, right?

Thanks!

There are several programs out there that offer a T32. This is 2-3 years of research training after your residency funded by NINDS. The idea is to get some pilot data during the T32 so you can apply for a K award (a mentored junior investigator award that funds you for 3-5 years as a bridge to an R01). This approach is a bit like getting a PhD without getting a PhD in an effort to fast track clinicians into research careers. Sounds good in theory, but in practice 2-3 years is very little time to get your feet under you in terms of research experience and K's are getting more and more competitive. There are also several research oriented fellowship programs that will train you clinically in the first year and get you involved in research after that in year 2+, sometimes funded by a T32.
