Hello,
First year FM resident in the US. Here on a J-1 visa. Both wife and I are from Canada and would like to move back after completing residency. Lots of Canadians in residency with me under similar circumstances and are hoping to hear from some who have gone this route. Getting a little information from second and third years, but not sure all of it is accurate.

First and foremost, what are the steps that need to be taken to go from US residency completion to working as a practicing physician in Canada? Would like to transition quickly as to avoid not drawing a paycheck.

Secondly, has anyone transitioned from being on a J-1 to a H1-B to avoid immediately moving back to Canada? Or had an employer able to extend or issue a new J-1 without leaving the country? Wouldn't mind the option of staying a year or two if there was a long segue in being allowed to practice in Canada.

Would be glad to hear anyone's experiences or advice. Thank you.

Since you did FM, its quite a straight forward process. Contact the provincial body in the province of your choice you want to move to.

Also, go to the CCFP website and it clearly outlines the general process.

As for J1 to H1B, the only way you could do that is if you get a J1 waiver. Which would then make you tied to 2-3 years of service. Converting would honestly not make any sense at all for your situation.

Just do your simple research, make a few small phone calls to figure it out. Once you're done FM, hope back over and it shouldn't be bad at all.

Other specialties have a more complicated process, be happy you ended up doing FM.
