All I got is heavy involvement in a cultural club at school for 3 years and vp of a fraternity, with occasional community service work from these two organizations...i'm never gonna get into med school with these credentials.

Wow- Everyone has done some pretty amazing things. I would accept you all!! The EC all interviewers are asking me about is professioinsally hip-hop dancing for the WNBA Utah Starzz and NBA Utah Jazz basketball teams at half-times. I've been a dancer for 20 years, and I almost didn't put this EC on my AMCAS application. My dad made me at the last minute. Boy am I sure glad I did because it seems to make me stand out. One interview invite was a personal email from the Dean of admissions telling me he was looking forward to learning more about my dancing experience. CRAZY.

OH ya--- THIS IS THE GREATEST DAY OF MY LIFE. . . I WAS ACCEPTED TO MEDICAL COLLEGE OF WISCONSIN. YAY!!!

Hmm... not sure what adcomm's would think are the best EC's, but here are the ones that mean the most to me and/or the ones I think are the most unusual:

1. Music - just the years of trumpet playing, piano playing, writing and arranging music... have played in dozens upon dozens of orchestras, bands, ensembles, etc. Not that unique, but because it is such a huge part of my life it is probably the EC that is the most important to me.

2. Fed sharks at 100 ft. down. That was fun. Running from the hammerhead wasn't, but in hindsight I think he probably could have cared less that I was in his path.

3. Desiged and built an off-road vehicle for collegiate competition. We were the first team that (that was crazy enough to have) used composite materials extensively in an off-road vehicle for this series. We also weren't satisfied with off-the-shelf transmission options, so I took it upon myself to design one for the team. That was cool. The car rocked, but unfortunately we didn't win overall. Pesky composites.

4. I design and build my own music/home-theater speakers (and have for customers as well). I've also designed home-theaters and consulted for a couple of studio's for acoustic design in new construction.

I was the first female coach of a men's collegiate sports team (I think of any sport, but def of my sport). At an interview someone was asking about why I was successful and I said (no joke), "I guess I'm just good with men". Four years of fighting stereotypes, and I said that. Gaaah.

I also think that job was the major contributor in everyone thinking I'm a dude on this forum (even without the avatar username confusion).

BTW, Q... I think we met in Chicago. Either that, or there are multiple chem grad students who went to the new school and are applying to med schools right now. We might run into each other again since we seem to be interviewing at a lot of the same schools 🙂

What kind of martial art?

Helped start an organization at my college that would foster 2 homeless dogs at a time in conjunction with a local humane society. Also helped build the house on campus due to close connections with local Habitat chapter who donated all the materials. I also currently foster dogs (right now there's 3) in my house.

My best EC's are personal ones. Division 1A football and before that 3 years of pro baseball in Padres farm system.

I was an assistant to two English professors who are SF/F experts. I edited a fantasy novel, researched issues in some authors' work, organized a visiting lecture given by Madeleine L'Engle... it was much fun. 😀

Non-Med EC : I wrote a book. A collection of fictional short stories 🙂 Its being presented in April! So Excited!

Med EC : Volunteering in the oncology unit at the Children's Hospital. oh, loved it, loved it, loved it.

non-med EC: autocross, have won a few competitions but nothing to brag about. breakdancing, all 4 yrs of college, a little now. slowly progressing through taekwondo (the real one) and might start up either muay thai boxing or choy li fut if i can find the instructors.

med EC: currently conducting 3 research projects in orthopedics, while assisting in surgeries, conducting clinics, having had two research projects through, one submitted, two being written up.

I agree! I still have her books from when I was a kid. My favorite one was "A Wind in the Door."
