MY GPA just really sucks so I keep telling myself that that's not the only thing they look at. So, I'd like to know what you feel is weak/strong about your application and maybe I will feel better knowing that I'm not the only one wanting to kill myself for having an atrocious GPA.

Weakness: GPA GPA GPA, and who knows? maybe the mCAT...will find out in june! :scared:

Strength: EC's

😳 thanks for your time!

curious, how bad is your "atrocious" gpa?

I know this isn't relevant to the EC question, but your mdapplicants profile lists you as being from NY and applying to UMiami... but I believe they have a 3.6 GPA cutoff for people from out of state, so you may want to apply elsewhere with that app money.

Just checked:
Residents of states other than Florida must have an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.6. Post-bac and graduate GPAs are not considered for non-Florida residents. A minimum MCAT composite score of 24 is required must most accepted applicants from out-of-state have MCAT scores well above 30.

Wow, they don't consider graduate/post-bacc GPAs for non-residents. That sucks.

3.4 as an engineer = impressive

adcoms know the difference in the difficulty levels between engineering vs. bio science classes

Agreed, but if I remember correctly they have a computer system that filters out people that don't meet the GPA requirement.

Anyway, she could email them beforehand and find out.

Wow, thanks for the advice Oculus, I 'preciate it. I know it's a pipe dream applying to FL schools esp when I'm not in-state resident, but most likely, I'll end up dropping them. I have waaaaay too many schools on my list, lol. the only reason i listed them was b/c my folks might be moving there soon and also my bf goes to UofF. But I'm 80% sure i'll drop them.

Thanks for the feedback everybody. I know that a 3.4 is considered more than okay from an engineering background...and the Columbia Univ engineering average GPA is somewhere around 2.8-9 (equiv to B-)... but I hear admins don't really care about what type of curriculum you were under... they just look at numbers, numbers, numbers, esp those of your BCMP grades. Oh well, I just have to hope for the best.

Thanks again guys. I hope to hear about your strengths and weaknesses as well! 😳

My weakness is probably biology GPA, my strength is DEFINTELY my ECs, good stuff there.

My GPA is horrible. 3.34 / 3.23 science
Biomedical Engineering major, but still, no excuse for such a subpar GPA.
If adcoms look at my GPA in relation to the school of engineering average GPA (2.60), then I'd be okay, but they won't.

Strengths:
1+ years research w/ 2 poster presentations & 1 published abstract to date (should be 2 full journal papers by next december)
6+ months clinical experience - 3 months hospital volunteer with extensive patient contact, 3+ months clinical research experience with soley patient contact for 10 hrs/week.

Hoping my clinical exposure will help round up my GPA? We'll see.

My weakness is that I interview horribly.

You should start the interview by talking about that dog you rescued . 😀 I'm sure that's the ticket to a relatively interesting interview. The interviewers will definitely be zoned into your story.

Hey Juice that is my major but im very early on. Are there any insights you can give or helpul hints.

My strength is my GPA/MCAT.

My weakness is my EC's. I've done a few things.. got emt-b (never used it), went on medical mission trip to south america, president of pre med society... but I have not done much concerning volunteering, especially non medical related volunteering.

My weakness is GPA. I'm sure there's more but in terms of primary and secondary apps, it'll just be my GPA.

My strengths are pretty much what i've done since undergrad.

My weakness in my application is my lack of awards. My strength is that I'm overall pretty well-rounded.

I'm a high plateau. Nothing interesting up there.

Oh man, please don't say that. I don't have awards either. I'm hoping adcoms over look that.

My weaknesses - I'm not too well rounded. Gave up playing my favorite sport regularly to put time into studying.

My strength - I'm still looking for it.

Honestly, my problem hasn't even been in any BME courses. I think I have a 3.6 BME GPA, it was mostly a string of mediocreness I went through in the middle. My GPA for each semester is something like: 3.2, 3.81, 3.0, 2.92, 3.0, 3.4, 3.18, 3.75, 3.71, 3.57. The last two semesters, 3.71 and 3.57, I was literally ****ing millimeters from 4.0's. Oh well. I would say...learn how to study? Be strong in the basic calculus principles, don't use your calculator for basic calculations if you can help it. I don't really know what to say. If I had to do it all over again, I would have made more of an effort to actually learn how to derive things than memorize them. I think this approach would have given me A's in Physics 1 (C) and Physics 2 (B). I'm certain of it, because I got 100's on the tests that I knew how to derive formulas, and not 100s on the rest. Know how to assess your own strengths and weaknesses, focus on your weaknesses. BME isn't that tough if you don't care about your social life.

Strengths: GPA, MCAT, well rounded ECs

Weakness: Age made me seem like more of a risk? Not having accomplished anything substantial in volunteer work or research? I don't think its my interview because I do have acceptances, and no rejections.... post-interview, but they probably felt that i didn't really bring anything special to the table, just a lot of typical strengths found in most applicants.

strengths: GPA, MCAT-i think, diverse EC's, interviewing skills

weaknesses: 2 years research w/no papers, freshman year dorm violation (required by amcas to be reported)

I guess another strength I could add to my list is my personal story. I was in a coma for 3 months when I was 16 years old. I hate using sad stories to express my interest in medicine, but this was reallly a life-changing time for me.

Strengths: MCAT, GPA, 4 quality LORs, research experiences, I've interviewed well in the past with conversational interviews

Weaknesses: My volunteer experiences have been disjointed and failed to show long term committments, I've done no service (well limited to a point that no adcom is gonna no about it since those times aren't AMCAS-worthy) outside of health care, My PS may be weak but that's this weekend's task so I hope to fix that, I suck at interviews that are impersonal with blunt question after blunt question, I'm lacking in experiences that demonstrate my ability to handle diversity.

I'll join the fray

Strengths: MCAT, 2.5 years clinical volunteer near 300 hours total, 2 years of teaching Ochem Chem Bio and Math, speak 5 languages, and if all else fails I look good in my skivies

Weaknesses: Don't relax easily, nearly 3 summers of research but no publications have 2 poster presentations and 2 powerpoint, BCPM GPA 3.6

My weakness is being a California resident.

Well not just that, but.... :scared:

😳 thanks for your time!

When new people here say they have strong EC's, I always chuckle a little bit, knowing what some of the kids who post here have done. So when I saw your post, I thought, poor girl, she doesn't know what she's getting into. Then I looked, and realized, you're one of those people. The ones that make the rest of us look like chumps.

Incidentally, the cello is my favorite instrument to listen to.

weaknesses: GPA, old fart who wasn't a successful Ibanker before doing the career switch, no publications to back up my research experience.

strengths: interesting life story, nice suit, Rach II.

Bump.

I wanna hear more!
