Hi, I've lived in the area for quite a long time...

It really depends on how far away you want to live from UIC/Rush. The Near West Side is a great neighborhood that is just north of UIC/Rush (walking distance). It is reasonably priced with plenty of restaurants/bars/parks/etc. The near south side is a little further away but there is a huge inventory of places for sale/rent there so you would be able to get a great deal.

Some people venture a little north into Bucktown which provides a easy enough commute and more of a bar scene than the NWS or NSS. I think the places are a little more expensive there as well.

Pilsen and Little Village are just south of the area and cheaper to rent/buy. There is a big Hispanic population in the neighborhoods so you'll be able to find awesome mexican food and great little food stands.

PM me if you have any other questions

Consider the wicker park area - that is where I am now, and I absolutely love it. Other good options - Loop area, Bucktown, Ukrainian Village, Greektown.

I would personally avoid Pilsen unless you were familiar with the neighborhood and comfortable in that environment as it is a socioeconomically depressed area and might not be an ideal place to walk home to alone late at night.

The area that UIC/Rush is at is really only nice/safe within the few blocks it takes up. Once you venture south and west, you have to know what you are doing. During the day time you'll be fine, but night time, you definitely don't want to be hanging around.

Basically want to stay north of 290. You could live in the south loop, it's an up and coming neighborhood. Lots of new condo's, basically right across from the museums and soldier field. If you want to live in a better part of town and be downtown, then anything north of Milluneum park, which is basically the gold cost, magnificnt mile, northwestern hospital, ect. Obviously, it's more expensive then the south or west loop, but the neighborhoods are just that much safer.

Another option would to be live far west out by Oak Brook/Oak Park area, however, the commute to Rush/UIC would suck since 290 is the worst traffic jam ever and it's also being "re-paved" (ie. 2 lanes for 2 years). This can be avoided depending on what tim eoyu have to be at the hospital. 6 AM for rounds, well you'll have no problem.

ukranian village and wicker park are relativley less expensive, not too busy, but lots of stuff to do. 10-15 min drive to campus. Safe place to start looking without getting screwed in an expenive neighborhood cause you didnt know better or likewise getting screwed living in a ghetto cause you wanted to save a couple bucks.

I currently live in the Lakeview neighborhood (3 blocks from the lake) and it's safe and very close to public transit/the El.

a lot of residents live in the Goldcoast/Lincoln Park area. It's a short drive and the great thing about Rush/UIC area is that two major train lines travel through em and the bus lines are goo too. Plus, Rush has a free postcall cab!
