hey everyone,

im taking the mcat this coming thursday and ive been doing most of my practice tests at my school library, pretty much in the same exact place. i was wondering what tactic most ppl used for practice tests? as in, would it be more beneficial for me to do my next 1-2 practice tests in a different location to see how i handle a different environment, since i clearly wont be taking the actual test in my school library?

Yeah, I think it's a good idea to change your testing environment a bit.

A friend actually suggested this to me, and I will try to do this as I continue taking my practice tests over the next couple of weeks. Anyway, my friend read this somewhere and says that if you study in one particular environment all the time, you are training your brain to associate the recalling a specific piece of information or the performing a particular cognitive skill with that environment. So when you are in an unfamiliar place, you will have a hard time.

I take 3 tests a week, two of them at a school library, and the one on weekends at home (since the library doesn't open at 8 in the morning). I've also taken exams at a different library, and on different floors too. Definitely take all of your tests in the quietest area possible because even whispering nearby can throw you off a lot (or use earplugs). I find the tests I took at home to be a little more relaxing but no significant differences in score. Overall, I feel like a school library would be the closest environment to the actual testing environment.
