First off i want to say this is an exceptional website, not only for the vast amounts of pertinent info, but also as a good motivational tool when hitting the books... As a pre- dent I was wondering if there are others like me who have chosen majors not related to the sciences. I myself am an history major. My love for the sciences, and appreciation of humanity as a whole, lead me to choose this major. I hope this will not hold me back from getting accepted into DS, so i was wondering if there are others like me out there, who have applied and have been accepted, and maybe some pointers on what to do.

Thanks!

Hello! I'm a psych major and I got accepted into BU. What i recommend is relating your major to dentistry in some way. For example, I liked psychology because you have to deal with people and their behaviors. So you could apply what you learned to help people feel more comfortable. You could also learn techniques on how to help people focus their attention away from pain, which is my area of research.

Hope that helps!

I am a Non-Traditional student changing careers, it may be helpful to search "non trad dental" post - you will be able to find a fair amount of information that will help you in preparing for your application and what has worked for other people in your situation.

Good luck

I was a sociology/anthropology major in undergrad and am headed to dental school in the fall. As long as you do well in the prereqs, you will be fine, and maybe even be more valued by some schools.

Btw, if I wasn't going to ds, I think I'd head for a PhD in anthro. Absolutely loved it in college. Good choice 😎

Good luck!

shout out to the anthro majors!!! probably the best non-traditional science major to have if you're interested in anything health related.

for the OP, majors don't really matter. its all about DAT, and how u did in prereqs that gets you to the interview door. but good job on choosing anthro. im anthro and got into 7 of my 8.

just do well....even if you major in theater (yea, i know 2 theater majors who are in dent school)

Music major and I'm not behind my classmates at all...Good luck!!

thanks for the reply guys!!! I dunno what made all of you choose these majors but for me it was the fact that i needed to take the pre-reqs anyways plus the 4 years of dental school, which is mostly science(bio/chem), i wouldnt really get to learn about much about diverse cultures, peoples, and their psychology, which i beleive will come in very VERY handy when operating your own business.

hmmm, not 100% sure but I think there is another major out there that would come in "handy" for running your own business....😀

im a POLY SCI major

i chose that becuase i have an interest in it, and at one point i was considering law. also i didint have to take alot of the higher level sciences and maths

but how would i "relate" that to my dental degree?

my B.A. was in English Lit... my only recommendation is if you choose a non-science major, make sure you kill your science classes and do well on the science sections on the DAT! I unfortunately did not, so I had to work a lot harder to convince dental schools that I could handle a heavy science load.

I hate the fact that they say ohh it does not matter what major you are BS.... most schools require many more science courses then regular pre-dental requirements. for some schools they require so many science courses that taking 2 more would def. enable one to graduate w/ bio degree.

Two bachelors for me, one in Computer Information Systems and the other in Finance. This is a big career change for me and I am excited.
