Hi all,

Just had a few quick questions about updating schools.

I was fortunate enough to have a co-author publication be accepted and published at a mid-high impact journal today. I also have already attended two MD IIs, and have two more in the coming weeks. For those schools, should I wait until after October 15th (apparently the first date schools will extend acceptances) to update them about the publication? Or should I just send the update ASAP? And for the schools I'm still waiting for IIs, would it make a difference to update them about the publication in terms of boosting my chances of receiving an II? I've seen conflicting advice on pre-II updates, so I wanted to see if any of y'all had pertinent information regarding them.

Also, in terms of citing the paper, should I just include the standard citation (authors, journal, title, date, DOI)? The pub doesn't have a PubMed link yet since it was just published.

Thanks! 🙂

Congrats on having your co-authored manuscript accepted for publication.
1) For those four schools, I suggest waiting. Check to see if post-interview updates are allowed at these schools. After Oct 15 is a reasonable time to send in allowed, relevant updates once you're already in the pipeline for admissions consideration.

2) Accepted manuscripts are worth giving updates on. It depends on the school as to what timing you should employ. You'll have to check websites as see when/whether updates are allowed. If any time is fine, then proceed at will.

3) A standard citation is fine, using the addition of [in press] if the exact details aren't know about date, volume, page numbers. I suggest waiting until the PMID# is known. It doesn't take long to receive one, like about two weeks.

Hi Catalystik, I just want to clarify - is this true for co-authorship where the applicant is towards the middle of a long list of authors? And is it appropriate if the publication is the only thing in the update letter or should there be other significant updates?

1) -Do you have other publications?
-Do you have a PMID# for this one?
-Any interviews pending or completed?
-Are you targeting highly-selective, research-oriented schools or those with a primary care focus?

2) -What else would you include in an update?

- This is my only publication.
- It doesn’t have PMID# yet- I was just notified of the acceptance very recently. Probably I’ll wait until it’s actually in print? Not sure how all this works to be honest.
- I only have 1 interview so far.
- I’m targeting a mix of both. I have some reaches in T20 and T30, but also all my state schools (Texas).

I’m not sure what would be appropriate to include, but I did begin a new volunteering activity that’s consistent with themes throughout the rest of my application. But that’s about it...

It doesn't matter that you're a middle author among many. It will still be a good update for your schools. Do you have enough information about when it will appear for a partial citation, using in [in press] for the missing page numbers and such?

Unless you already have a good number of volunteer hours with the new activity, I would hold off mentioning it for now, as it would have little impact on decision-making. Save it for a future update.

I have the article name, authors, journal that it will be published in, and the manuscript itself. Is there any other information I would need? I tried to find out when it will actually be published and my former lab mentor told me that it will be published in about one month? Would you recommend I wait until then before sending in the updates? And do you think this type of update could really influence interview invitation offers? Sorry for all the questions and thank you for your help.

I’ll hold off on mentioning the volunteering!

1) A Pub Med ID# would be great, or Month and Volume.

2) Once it can be found online on an official site where it's easily accessible, you're good to go.

3) I don't know anything about the rest of your application, but if a research-oriented school liked your application but didn't put it in the "Immediate Interview Invitation Pile" initially, this could make a difference, if you perhaps lacked evidence of research productivity otherwise. It also helps in general to indicate ongoing interest in a school by submitting an update (at some schools that take pre-interview updates).

Ditto for a new volunteer activity IF you were sparse in that area on the Primary application, but only after you've got a fair amount of volunteering done and not just because you intend to do it. Future intentions are not given weight in interview-offer decision-making.

4) 👍
