how do you find out which programs offer prelim IM or surgery spots? i tried looking at the ACGME site and they only show transitional spots.

also can anyone compare prelim vs transitional spots. which one should one choose if he/she wishes to go into ophtho but they didnt match the first time around in SFmatch?

also is it wise to do a prelim or TY at the program where you wish to match for a categorical (i.e. ophtho) but failed the first time around?

i know if you match the first time around, people usually look for "cush" programs.

To find prelim spots, go to FREIDA's website:

http://www.ama-assn.org/vapp/freida/srch/

After you type in the specialty and the location, go under "optional criteria" and click on "offers preliminary position". Tha will limit the search to only those programs which offer prelim spots.
