Premed really getting in the way of my life...

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
the essence behind premed vs other career tracks is delayed gratification. so, even if there are no hookups now, chicks like docs, many will come one day. nurses too.

I'll probably get flamed to a crisp because of this post, but this whole thread typifies why people get pissed off at the pre-med community. Getting into medical school isn't the epic, scary, Lord of the Rings type of problem a lot of people make it out to be. Are you doing good in your pre-reqs and your other classes? Did you study and land a decent MCAT score? Then you have a good chance of getting in. There are plenty of careers that are harder to get into (Navy Seals, being an actor, etc.) and I'm tired of people who make being a pre-med the biggest part of who they are in college. People in the application process will be far better off if they realize that step one is finding out who you are and what makes you tick in life. And don't tell me that its being a pre-med or being a doctor because the former will leave you dry and soulless and 99% of pre-meds (myself included) have no idea what actually being a physician is like. Granted, my attitude might be different had I not gotten in, but I really get tired of "Oh, I can't do this or that because I'm a pre-med." I had that attitude my freshman year of college, but thankfully I hung out with a good set of friends who were able to call "bull****" on me when I needed it.

EDIT: I should say though that I don't want to come off as unsympathetic. I understand what the OP is feeling, but the moral of the story is that when you're feeling that way, you're likely doing something wrong and need to get things in balance a little more.

actually, i know pretty well what being a physician is like, considering my father is a doctor, as well as many of my uncles. my cousin is currently in med school also, and she tells me what its like.

and why shouldn't you make it the biggest part of your college life? you can still do other stuff, but your focus should be on pre-med stuff.

That's why I said 99%. As far as focus, that's not the problem the OP was referring to. We've been talking about sacrificing having a life in order to focus on pre-med stuff which is pretty bogus.

right, that is bogus. but if you're just starting out with classes and college, you need to sacrifice everything else until you get your groove on how to study and how much. after that, you will have time to do other stuff.

i wish you guys woudl lay off the hooking up. you guys are looking to much into it. i mean seriously. if its with a gf and you can do it anytime you want why not choose better times.

also, i posted it cuz im whining about the fact that i just lost my summer to it. and dont tell me to suck it up. its so much easier said then done. im sure everyone here has been annoyed at the things you need to do for premed, from required courses to clinical experience to honors research.
if you don't whine sometime, you will just explode, at least i will. anyways i still hate how much summer is going, but i have 4 more days to make the best of it before classes start up.

there is no life...only the force...opps i mean pre med
