Hello everyone,

I recently just graduated from the University of Central Florida as a Health Information Management major with a 3.49 GPA.
I am interested into going into physical therapy.
I was looking into the prerequisite classes for DPT. I'm planning to take Chem I & II, Phy I & II, and Bio I & II this summer.
I have already taken the other prerequisite courses.
And I have started shadowing a licensed PT in an outpatient setting.
My questions are:
-Does anyone know other settings (besides in patient where I should shadow)
-how highly do they rank your GRE score
-Are there any tips I should know about when I start applying for the DPT program?

GRE is very important.
That sounds like a heavy load for this summer.... if I were you I'd space it out a bit. With only a 3.49 cumulative, you NEED to do really well in your prerequisite courses... just remember that.

I would avoid summer session science classes at all costs, I tried a summer session Gen Chem I while working full time and it was impossible. There was no way to work all day, go to class for 3 hours a night and then sit through a 3 hour lab after the 3 hour class and study every night, no way for me anyhow, you may be able to manage your time a bit more effectively and make out a little better but I would hate to see you lose money if you don't drop in time. And remember because the summer courses are condensed you only have a day or two to drop to get a full refund. Just some food for thought good luck!

Are you looking to apply at UCF? If so I would take A&P I and II. They will accept BIO, but in the DPT FAQ it states "It is the DPT faculty's belief that 8 credits in A&P may better prepare you for the coursework in the program." Not sure if that will have much impact on your application but it may have a more favorable look for you if you had an option of A&P or BIO in your post-grad and what you chose.

I took physics 1 over summer and while manageable, I would never take on the load that you are. It would benefit your sanity and pt application if you could space those out. Take some time, get good grades then apply. Don't rush just to get them in on time. As far as GRE, obviously the higher the scores the better, but I got the minimum verbal that a lot of schools take and still got to choose between three schools at the end of it. Would I recommend that? No. Lol if I had the money I would have retaken them, but I didn't. Tips? Research, research, research. Really look at your grades and where you have a decent shot, look at cost, etc.

Hello everyone,

I'm planning to take Chem I & II, Phy I & II, and Bio I & II this summer.

Is this even possible? I'm thinking you meant this year? You need labs with most of these classes

Thanks everyone for your suggestions
🙂 I really appreciate it.

Hello tgrassi!

Yep that's my first choice. I took A&P I/II at Valencia. I got A's in both of those classes. I was thinking about taking the other science courses at Seminole state college but the course codes Don't quite match up. I think they offer a lower level of bio, phy, and chem at SSC. I'm really not sure though. Did you take any of your prerequisite's at a community/local college?

Yes, for this summer i'm planning to take chem I, Phy I, and bio I (with the labs) and in the Fall I'll be taking the second part of these classes. Do you think I can take 3 science courses in the summer?
Thanks for the input!

If you take all of those classes during summer, you're gonna have a bad time.

I took Bio 1, Chem 1, Physics 1, and Med Term last semester. This semester I'm taking the 2nd parts of all those classes. It's a lot of work, but manageable. Don't expect to be partying every night or anything. lol.

Hm, ok thanks for your input. I think it's time I reorganize these classes. I just want to make that I'll have enough time to take them before the next DPT deadline.

Summer courses are definitely doable. The five-week courses that meet five days a week are killer. I felt like I was in class all the time, especially when lecture was in the morning and lab was in the afternoon. If you don't think you'll get a good grade, then don't rush it. However, taking science courses in the summer is a good way to simulate PT school.
