I'm someone who has no pubs. I am trying to understand the hierarchy of pubs by what I've read on sdn.

How do you rank case reports, posters, abstracts, journal articles, case series, clinical trial papers, basic science papers, etc.?

journal articles > case reports > posters/abstracts.. Usually, basic science > clinical due to the amount of time it takes but it boils down to what journal and the type of research it's being done on.

Pub > no-pub at the premed level

what about for residency (like if you're in med school)?

Yes, but beyond that. Like is a case series better than a case report? Is it weird to have 6 case reports and 1 article or is it better to have 2 articles and 1 case report?

Pub > no pub at the premed level and even at the med student level. Beyond that, you'll want to tailor your pubs to the field you're in. As someone mentioned above, the general accepted hierarchy is manuscripts > case reports > posters/abstract and basic science > clinical. Beyond that the exact details are more fuzzy (is two third authors pubs > 5 first authors case reports?).

Yes, but beyond that. Like is a scenario series better than a scenario report? Is it uncommon to have 6 scenario opinions and 1 articles or is it better to have 2 articles and 1 scenario report?

Asked and answered correctly. Stop it.

Get thee to pre allo. There is no exact formula to satisfy the nitpicking that you are presenting. Having a lot of pubs where your name is listed first or close to first is great, but it isn't the norm. Most docs aren't interested in research.

Also a case series is better than a case report if all other factors are the same (disease, journal, quality, conclusions, etc), but in real life it isn't that cut and dry. Being the first to report a phenomenon in a patient could be just as or more "prestigious" as the subsequent publications.

Allopathic is a forum for med students to discuss topics relevant to their current level of study, not for pre-meds to ask questions about getting into med school. Moving to pre-allo.

But...I'm not trying to get into med school....I'm already in. I am trying to plan for residency.

Was anybody else disappointed that this thread wasn't about the relative importance of drinking establishments? I for one think that choosing the correct pub has an important impact on networking and other intangibles that lead to success both in medical school and beyond.

OP: your status says Pre-Medical. Might wanna fix that. Unless by "in medical school" you mean you aren't in medical school just yet. The class of 2016 hasn't exactly matriculated yet.

regarding publication..I know you all are referring to journal articles..but I've recently seen that there are couple undergraduate science journals..where it's super easy to get published haha...do those count for anything?

If they aren't peer reviewed- than not really.

That is definitely where my mind went. Great minds think alike. I can't say I didn't once think Pub Med was a bar..

OP- are you planning to do all those type of research? Or you want to know what is best? I think it would be best to find your research interest and focus on the best type of publications that come from it. If it's lab based research than obviously you won't be getting many clinical trial publications from it. Systematic reviews are always a good thing to have too.

I'm already doing it...but I have the opportunity to pick whether I want to do 3 case reports or one longer study. That's where I'm stuck because both are really cool...I just wanted to know which one is better for the CV.

Yes I'm class of 2016, so "in" = accepted but not going to school yet.

Hijacking thread 😱

So I had an abstract accepted to an american heart association scientific session. It will be my first pub and I will get to either do a poster or oral presentation. It was all clinical stuff I collected/analyzed. Was wondering if the AHA was "prestigious" or if it was not really a big deal to get accepted.
