seeing as this thread has gotten to 100 posts, i gotta chime in.

i am a card-carrying asa resident member. i am a frequent contributor to this forum. i work with techs, nurses, crna's, other residents, attendings, nurses in other departments, other residents, other attendings, nurses aides, food service workers, cleaning staff... you get the picture. i listen to everyone and want to hear their advice, opinions, feelings, wants, wishes, desires. i strive to communicate with everyone. but, if and when push comes to shove, i will let whomever is existing solely to challenge me know that the buck stops with me (as the direct representative of the attending who's co-signing my work). that should be good enough for any physician. when it comes down to it, i will listen - and even learn - from every possible person i can. this makes me a better physician. and, i have a great reputation as a confident, knowledgable doctor because of it. but, if someone makes it obvious that they are existing solely to challenge me, i will make it clear - with facts - that the ultimate responsibility ends with me and, if necessary, remind them that the discusison we are having is a courtesy. not surprisingly, this gets me even more respect.

i want no part of this embarrassment you are proposing.

this 'private forum' business is incredibly lame. if you can't handle being a professional and dealing with dissent, pick another profession. what are you going to do each time a nurse questions one of your orders? are you going to run away into some private room and have a discussion among your other resident colleagues about how stupid that nurse is and she should have listened to you? trust me you will have a very rough residency if you think this is an effective way to handle confrontation.

thinkfast, you are very paranoid and insecure. i just can't understand how you can live in a world where you feel so threatened by words that you have to run and hide. this private forum business has propelled your lameness to new heights.

count me out.
You are clearly missing the point. The point is not to 'run' away from them. The point is to actually DO something. You can moan and groan all you want to on here. Then what happens? A SRNA/CRNA pops in and just takes you on for joy ride.

Why are you changing subjects by the way? No one said anything about cleaning staff, techs, regular nurses etc. Of course we all get along with them.

The Private forum is meant for people that actually CARE about their profession and would like to IMPLEMENT change instead of just 'fighting' little trolls online to no avail. What happens on here? nitecap came back as this guy TheSleepMaster. Are you doing anything about it besides arguing with him. He came back again right? Has he been SWATTED away? nope.

So what gives? Ppl post the tricks of the trade on here and then HE becomes more knowledgeable so that he's better capable of taking YOUR job one day (or atleast doing it for a cheaper rate). Dude, HE's even told us this POINT blank in one of his posts. he's told us he comes on here just to soak up the knowledge from attendings/residents. Suggestion: dont get shortsighted 😉

LooK i can careless if you join or not. It's COMPLETELY voluntary. You are definitely entitled to your opinion, just dont impose. Yah ur write there's >100 views/posts on this thread. Why? People want change..

Well, I haven't said s hit for a while so I thought I'd offer my opinion. Sharing knowledge is the right thing to do. Soon, you youngsters will take an oath to pass on what you have learned to others. That is what being a doctor is. The word 'doctor' from latin, means teacher. Nobody is going to take your job. there is a shortage of physicians and the #1 most needed specialists are anesthesiologists (at least at the time of the JAMA article 2004). Your duty is to pass on the tricks to those who want to learn, regardless of their role.

furthermore, regarding the pointless bickering....you guys are ALL extremely intelligent and highly motivated people. why worry so much about how you're going to fight over the profession when you could invest your energy into advancing the field. i'm not even done with my CA-1 year, and i have a paper coming out. I'm also working on a new ettube with another resident.
enough. sorry for the lecture.

nothin' to do with this thread per se, but i think this line is classic. "a courtesy"...great material. i might have to add this to my repertoire that's already full of intellectual insults.

ok...back to the thread. sorry for the interruption.

Now back to the thread 😉

I couldn't agree more. We are all professionals, and this fuss over CRNA's is starting to turn into a witch hunt. The forum works well now, and I never would have gotten all the helpful advice if it weren't here on SDN. Because I don't have a "Chair of anesthesia" at my school, I can't get anyone to sign my ASA application, and there are probably others out there that aren't quite sure whether to join ASA because they are just checking the profession out. Let's think of furthering our profession by allowing all to participate and see what we are about. Being "elitist" won't accomplish that goal.

You tellem' Becky & Volatile! 😀

The most boring parties are the ones that the same damn people keep showing up everytime, talking about the same crap, telling the same stories over and over. SDN is already like that too much already...make it into a web site that you have to apply to make a member, not only will there be fewer people, but the six people posting about "sensitive information" will get really, really boring, really quick.

nitecap, gone or not. we will always be fighting about something, won't we? i love this job.

not true at all. We'll still be posting on here. I think the private forum will be used for things that are more 'for physician provider's eyes' only.

There have been NUMEROUS members who are being invited as we speak. If by the end of today you have not been invited...leave a message on this thread. In order to gain membership you will have to meet the criteria below

Again, membership to the private forum will require two things:
1) You are or will be a physician provider
2) You are a member of the ASA
3) Be recommended as being 'trustworthy' by atleast two current members of the private forum

we have a pretty good system in place to check credentials 👍

Man... I take a few weeks off to go biking in Colorado and all hell breaks loose around here.

I meet the above three criteria and would like to peek behind the Green Door. Are there any hints concerning panus lifting & taping on this forum? 'Cause my back is still smarting from my 2 hour med student/panus-holder duties yesterday.

The whole "private forum" thing is ridiculous and I for one will not be joining it. The public forum seriously degenerated because people posted stuff that was ridiculous and inflammatory (trolls). This isn't so much of a problem except that others choose to "feed the troll" and the degeneration spirals even furthur downward. Truthfully, I would just skim threads or not read them at all when they headed that way. The whole CRNA issue is DEAD HORSE that I wish would never recur here. I also think that the moderators have done an extremely poor job of locking threads before they spiral out of control. I understand that both are residents and are busy (as am I) but they were not nearly as active as I believe they should of been. As far as your criteria, # 3 is a joke. I've been a member of SDN almost since its inception, back when there were a total of 4 or so total forums and long before the residency forums even existed. The only person who posts on this forum who has been here longer is OMD himself (and Lee). I post and reply to PM's only occasionally. I wonder if someone from the "private forum" can vouch for my "trustworthiness" because I don't spend all day posting. SDN is a fantastic resource and I believe this forum should remain public all the way. Later.

Damn right Arch - ANY criteria weakens the whole concept of sdn. Lets not blame the moderators - they are volunteers for a free web site - c'mon. The real problem is not the trolls, its the people not ignoring them. The trolls will always be there - no matter what you do. Get rid of the nurses on the forum, it'll be the md vs do trolls, etc.

is there a way I can get access to the private forum - I am at the end of my CA-1 year in Detroit at henry ford hospital and a resident ASA member - contact me for further information - thanks!

They are both residents, just like I am. I know they are busy as well. I do think they could have done a better job and I probably am being harsh. You are right, the problem is that the trolls are hungry, and it just keeps getting fed.

Heaven forbid a non-doctor should learn doctor stuff! Lock up all the medical books! Take down all the medical websites! Change the nursing school curiculum back just to giving patients baths and bowing down before doctors! They may take over our jobs! Stop researchers, cause they aren't physicians, and shouldn't know medicine, either? They may want our jobs as well! Is there anyone else we need to limit??????? 😡

The private forum is for the politically minded and those who care to learn more about the issues affecting anesthesiology today.

If you don't care about the politics/issues of your chosen profession then don't join. It's as simple as that. For everyone one of you who doesn't, there is someone else who does.

It works like this:
1) No one cares if any of you joins
2) You are not needed
3) You will not be missed.

Any questions?

Hey everyone

those of you that sent me info today, I could not verify some of the info because ASA servers were down to day.

Hopefully they'll be up tommorrow. So keep the inquiries coming 👍

Hey I am glad you guys opened up your XXX forum. It sure has been a whole lot quiter here on the main forum since, hasnt it. Now who was starting all that drama? Funny how it has disappeared. Vegas is da bomb.

this is precisely the immature, elitist, separatist, arrogant attitude that has gotten things to the state they are currently in. what hubris you show with this post.

anyways.....

now back to our regularly programmed thread 😉

BTW folks, those of you that PMd me this week, should have gotten a reply from me by now. If not, contact me again👍

VERY well said. This is one of my missions as well. Anesthesiology has so much science yet that needs discovering, and this is one of the roles our education (both undergrad and medical) has given us an extra foundation for, above and beyond what the CRNAs have. Congrats on the paper!!

Long time visitor. Second year med student here as well as ASA member. Interested in accessing the private forum. Please PM me for pertinent info. Thanks

Hi guys. I've been trying to catch up on the requests from last week. Everyone that had asked for an invite to the forum up until this point should have received a response either way.

Let me know if you have not.

Thanks

Can someoen please pm me with the information of how to gain access to the private forum. I'm going to be starting PGY-1 at a 4 year intergrated program and I want to get a look at this forum before I start!

I would also like to be able to enter this forum, how do I get there and do I qualify, I will be entering an anesthesia residency next year at Baystate.

I'll be a CA-1 in 2007. Haven't joined the ASA (yet) -- not sure how to go about doing that, but would like to. Whats the easiest (read: least taxing on the old bank account) way to join? Will the private forum be for people who haven't started CA years yet?

thanks!

you see all the people that are being deprived of this "forum" and have to go through the hassle of trying to sign up? come down out of your clubhouse, children. post right here. don't be elitists.

Hi there MDin2006

glad to see the interest.

if you could, just fish through this thread. you will find out how to get the form. The instructions are super easy. All you need is your chair's signature. As for the $$. Depending on what time of the year, it can either be $5 or $10.

Hope that helps 👍
