Probation for U of C hospital's brain surgery training program
By: Mike Colias July 01, 2009
(Crains) A University of Chicago Medical Center program that trains doctors in brain surgery has been placed on a two-year probation by a national accreditation group.
The Chicago-based Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education wouldnt identify the reason for placing U of Cs neurosurgery training program on probation, which occurred June 19.
In a written statement, the Hyde Park medical center said the move likely was related to a 10% drop in the number of patients the program has treated after several physicians have left or retired since 2007. Maintaining adequate volumes so medical residents have enough opportunities to practice is an important factor in the accreditation process.
In the past year, under new leadership, the program has been able to recruit talented new faculty, which, along with the teaching affiliation with NorthShore University Health System, beginning July 1, should enable neurosurgery residents to participate in the care of many more patients, increasing the total volume well above previous levels, U of C said in the statement.
Loss of accreditation would cost the hospital federal funding that supports training and medical education.
The hospital said it would take 60 days before the council releases the reason for its probation decision, which was first reported by the Chicago Tribune on its Web site Wednesday.
