I heard the UCSF and some other schools use the problem based approach in a portion of their curriculum, can anyone please explain how that works?

like a pseudo-problem based thing....ive been to USC a PBL only school and I wanted to know how the pseudo thing works....thanks

in problem based learning, a clinical case will be presented to you, and you are supposed to analyze the case and discuss with a small group of your classmates. You will need to look up information for some conditions, drugs etc. The idea is that through your research and discussion, you learn what you have to learn. It is much more creative and less boring compared to the traditional teaching method.

For example,

A patient came in the ER last night, her left face was swollen, she was in pain, she couldnot close her mouth. She was currently pregnant and had not been to the dentist forever...A set of x-rays were presented to you, and you go figure it out what happened to her. Of course, this is just a shortened version, the original one is more complicated, but you get the idea.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the input and I appreciate it. I have been to a PBL session at USC and I also participated in one....but I wanted to know how UCSF's "pseudo-problem" based thing is different that pure PBL???
