Hi there, this is my first post and I was hoping for some advice from anyone who had been in a similar situation.
Here's a little background...
I am married, recently separated(year and a half), and out of an abusive relationship. My first two years of school I was emotionally/physically abused by my spouse which caused a dip in my grades from a 3.8(first semester) to a 3.1(junior year, first semester). I left school for a year after being assaulted (while pregnant) for the last time and had a miscarriage, and have recently returned in order to finish my major. I only have Stats II in my major left to complete and I will be finished with my major, but have to have one more full year before I can graduate. In the Spring Semester of 2017 I managed straight A's.
I've wanted to go to med school, but I never felt "smart" enough to do it. After my year off of handling two jobs, paying student loans, dealing with harassment from my ex and financial aid, I decided this is the path I want to take because I feel I am capable of handling whatever may be thrown my way. I want to go back home and contribute to a community which needs doctors.

Now, my Cumulative GPA is currently at a 3.3. However, I lack any science courses. I had planned to take biology in my senior year of college as a Psych student. I'm strong in Biology and English and weaker in math, but I've managed to pull in regular A's before with extra effort. I am willing to put in any effort that may be needed.

Here's where I need the advice. I am going to be taking Intro to Inorganic Chem and Intro to Organic Chem(If my institution approves me taking this in another school, still waiting on a response) this summer while working a full time job, which is in my home town, instead of my institution. I wanted to take Inorganic Chem 1, Organic Chem 1, and Gen Physics along with Gen Bio in my University in the Midwest during Fall 2017. I don't have any calculus(only pre-calc) background but I planned to do self study during the summer. My advisor told me I wouldn't be able to handle it (then again, I just met her 30 minutes prior to that meeting) and I wanted someone's feedback on this. I want to be able to take MicroBio, Biochemistry and Gen Physics II in my last year at this university. I understand there will be a gap year because I would not be prepared for the MCAT without knowledge in these classes. I plan on working and volunteering during this time to pay off my student loans.

Would you recommend I just take classes after graduation and do an informal post-bacc for my requirements and lessen my work load? I was going to work during Fall Semester 2017 at a nursing home near my school as well. Please let me know. I know there's a lot of information, and I'm not afraid of honest answers. Please be as brutal as possible to know what I am dealing with. Thank you!

Hi gemenai,

I think your advisor is right about this. All those courses in one semester is going to be extremely tough especially if working full time. Take it from me who is notorious for over burdening myself and taking on too much. I think it would be much better if you space it out a bit. I know it would take extra time and years but it may well be worth it to save yourself the difference between and A or B or even lower in one of these courses. This is how I would do it:

Summer:
First semester Gen Bio
First semester Inorganic Chem

If you can do both of these and get A's then take 3 classes for Fall 2017

Second Semester of Gen Bio
Second semester of Inorganic Chem
First semester Physics

If you still got all A's continue with 3 classes.

Spring 2018
Second Semester Physics
First Semester Organic Chem
MicroBio

I don't know about at your university but at my university Biochem is 5 credits!!! I would take that by itself in the summer.

Then just take Second semester of Organic Chemistry in the Fall or even Spring.

By the way your prerequisites do not have to be complete by the time you apply. They just have to be complete by the time you matriculate.

Best,

Cristina
