So a couple weeks ago I met with my PI that I did research with last summer to ask her if I could resume work in her lab next semester. She happily agreed and I felt relieved knowing that I secured research for my senior year.

Only problem is that I found out recently that the undergrad a year above me that has been working in the lab for 2 years is about to graduate without a pub. Is this an indication that I won't be able to get a pub too? Are there any know strategies to increase the likelihood of getting a pub?

Pick a lab known for putting out a lot of pubs in high impact journals, ask about the chances of publication before committing to a lab.

If getting published is your goal with your research, you should be sure that your lab will provide you that opportunity before you sign up for a long-term commitment IMO.

pubs are pretty much driven by luck at the undergraduate level.

don't worry about it too much.

Fact. I have been working in a lab for almost 3 years now and have no publication, but did a summer research program and am in the process of finishing one up for that.

Also, I do not think a publication should be your only motivation. I mean, I have learned so much in my lab that I would have never learned in classes or anywhere else and I thoroughly enjoy my work. Also, by having learned a ton of skills in my long term lab, I was able to go to a lab for the summer and get enough data to significantly contribute to their manuscript.

Also, as a senior now looking for a year long job, my multitude of skills are going to weigh much heavier than a pub ever would have for getting a job.

Just my 2 cents.

it's nice to be able to list a publication but i like the people i work with and i find the research interesting so i spend time in a lab. i'm not very interested in academia anyway.

I'm slowly coming to this conclusion. At worst I'm sure to get a good LOR.

To be honest that should really be all that you're aiming for. A pub is great, but if you can get a very strong LOR from the PI by working hard and not being a pub-gunning jerkoff, the mission has been accomplished.
