Program had a lot to offer with: trauma, burn, pulm rehab, LTAC, budding Interventional bronch instruction program, great research opportunities but not too heavy on research. Small town with big university perks so great location in my opinion. Will definitely rank highly!

H1 visa for fellowship has always been tricky. In the last 2 years, it has gotten more competitive especially to match in university setting unless you are applying in your program or have huge research behind your back. Big Uni's who do sponsor H1-B (or claim on their website) ponder a lot about visa when ranking you as if your CV/credentials are almost equal to someone who does not need a visa; they would probably go with that person, than you. J1 certainly is much better option and if you don't mind J1, then tell the programs.

As for H1-B visa applicants, it is not over. I am sure more invites should be on the way from many northeastern programs. Keep up the hope. The interviews will come till mid March. You can match with one interview; but it is said that if you have 5 interviews, you are probably going to do well. my colleagues and I (needing H1) had 10+ last year.

programs like AEMC Montefiore, thomas jefferson, temple, Cook county, Cleveland Clinic, OHSU, CWRU, Iowa, UTMB, Buffalo, UVa, Tufts- NEMC, Rochester and many other NY programs generally have lots of FMGs with H1 visa and their some of these places have amazing clinical training.

Thanks Moozy, its a little reassuring. The harsh reality of visa issues don't dawn until you actually see the pile of rejections every time the email is checked! Having said that, I am sure many of these rejections are related to my own credentials or lack of them. However, I do believe visa plays a big role. I guess it's a waiting game now and hopefully I will soon hear from many of the programs you mentioned.
As for the interviews I have gotten- AE-Philly, AE-Monte, Nebraska, U Buff, MCW-Wisconsin. 5 better than none, but I think 8-10 is a safe number judging by the rain of ivs received by some applicants.
Will post my iv experiences soon- am starting ivs next month.

I'll be posting my interview impressions after rank lists are in. I'm sorry if this bugs anyone. I'm not trying to be a dick, but, hey, this is my career and I'd kind of like it if some comment on some backwater internet forum didn't cause some butthurt because when I talked about "drawbacks" at such and such a program someone from the program saw and figured out who I was, and kilt me rankings.

brown university and univ of mass rejections - i guess we are in the last lap of the interview season and it is not looking promising to me.

i am sorry to hear about our colleagues with out the interviews and wish them good luck in the coming months. i am really surprised at the level of competition raking up in the pccm domain.
 
kpchal2 I agree with you.... 2 rejections since morning Creighton and U mass and I am pretty certain that brown must be on its way....

But definitely I think PCCM is becoming highly competitive and at this time wih the way things ae going I will put it ahead of nephrology.

PCCM has been more competitive than nephro for a long time

Another interesting theme this year according to my home PCCM PD, are all the applications where people have been out of residency for one to two years and the CV has 5-10 cardiology posters and abstracts, with a personal statement saying how they've ALWAYS wanted to do pulmonary and critical care medicine - HA!

Interview Experience at Georgetown Univ Hospital*

First off this is an amazing program with an exploding interventional bronchoscopy program run by an incredibly awesome attending. The faculty and staff are uniformly nice and engaging. It feels like it's one big family between fellows and the attending staff.

Great opportunities are available to become competent in EM-Nav for peripheral nodules, stents, and closed thorascopy in the OR. PCCM here does it's own pleurodesis, pleurovacs, and have ownership off all bronchoscopies at Georgetown Univ Hospital.*

The program director and associate program directors are all very nice, very close knit. The fellows are all very happy across the board. It's a good balance of broad clinical experience, with lots of opportunities to participate in emerging technologies. EBUS is expected to be up and running very soon. The bronch suite is being moved from it's current room to a larger work suite.*

The MICU is about 19 beds with overflow into the SICU when needed. I can't remember the exact team set up but it's one attending, one fellow, 3 residents and 4 interns with an ER resident at times. All MICU rotations are at Georgetown Univ Hospital. CCU, CTSICU, and SICU rotations are done at Washington Hospital Center, which is where all of the complicated cardiology and CTSurg cases *are concentrated. For MICU at Georgetown, it's home call M-F and there is an attending in house M-F. I apologize, I forgot how weekends work out, but the call schedule seemed very reasonable. Lots of variety of MICU cases. There is an ambundancce of oncology patient admissions and Liver tranplant admissions where MICU is primary service. Clinic is one half day a week where 5-8 patients are seen under the supervision of the same attending. It seemed like you're attached to one attending's practice for 3 years.

I was thoroughly impressed with this program, and plan on ranking it very high. I think that there is a great wealth of broad clinical experience to help you become excellent in any direction you wish to take your career path, whether that may be ICU, sleep, bronchs, asthma or pulmonary HTN.

The main drawback is not really an issue for me, but that's in the availability of basic science research, which the program is short of in projects. There is plenty of great clinical research, particularly in thoracic malignancies, and the PCCM program is at the helm, along with Rad/Onc, of a very robust cyberknife program where plenty of clinical trials and outcome studies are budding.

Same here, 2 Interviews only, want some help. Are they asking Medical questions...Do I need to carry my Cv abstracts (where i am the third fourth author) etc..
 
I have only been to 2 interviews so far but for what it is worth my interviews have been extremely chill. They have asked me about my goals and my interests in pulm and CC and then I just sort of took it from there. If you take charge of the interview and direct them to what you want to talk about it is easier. If you just sit there like a lump on a log and have them fire questions at you it could get more difficult. All my interviews seemed very conversational and there were absolutely no medical questions. And if there are I am sure they will be about the basic stuff that we should know as 2nd/3rd year residents or hospitalists. I mean we aren't pulm/cc specialists yet! Good luck and hopefully your interviews are as great as mine have been. I have another one tomorrow so will let you know if it is any different than the experiences I have had so far.

And don't worry about bringing your CV. They have everything in a file on their desk so not necessary. About the abstracts, I guess you can bring them but doubt they will ask to see them. It would be better if you just talked about them anyway since they are areas you should know a lot about and conversing should be easy.

Couldnt agree more with above. I have had 2 interviews as well. Both places: standard questions like why pulm? why critical care? None of the places asked anything remotely related to medicine apart from the research abstracts etc. They had everything on me on their file, even though some of them were actually looking at the file for the first time! But yep, easy flowing conversations. Just be your usual normal selves. Good luck! May everyone match!!

Interviews have been very laid back. Occasionally they toss you a PhD, and they seem a little more interested in talking about research in detail, but I can't think of a single MD type who was interested in more than general details as in: "We did 'this' to look for 'this' and we saw 'this'" Occasionally you'll run into someone with a similar research interest area as you and you might discuss some of the cool new lit you or he has seen. I had one guy point out an obscure study I didn't know about that related peripherally, but not directly to some of the stuff I'm working on. My database could be used to investigate some similar things (more abstracts for me . . . and it's all about me anyway, right?)

I'm happy that I managed to pull in not just enough interviews that by the statistics I should match somewhere, but that I get to actually check out some places simply because I want to. So, I can only sympathize with colleagues still waiting for more invites. For what it's worth, there should still be some invites coming as people start to cancel interviews. Good luck to everyone, and just be yourself (how could you be anyone else anyway, right?)

Anyone any comments on the program? Havent heard too many good things about it. But people whom I have heard them from may have been biased! Any input??
 
Anyone heard if UT-SW has finished offering interview invites? Seems like only one person on this board got an interview there...
 
how often do people get prematches in pccm. if offered one is it advisable to take it or go for match. i have some interesting interviews but also anticipating a prematch. so would u guys suggest i go for match or take the prematch.
