I am already in an quite good university residency training program (PGY1). Due to J1/H1 visa issue, I need to transfer to another institution where I can get H1 visa for my PGY2 nd PGY3 training. I can't get J1 visa because of some stupid regulation from my country and my current institution doesn't sponsor H1. How should I approach this problem as the first step? Should I call programs who sponsor H1 randomly to find any opening?

No issue with my current program. Even though I will get good support from my PD and good recommendation letters, I am still not sure how hard it is or possible to get it through this time. Your suggestion is deeply appreciated here.

This sounds weird. If your institution doesn't sponsor visas, I'm confused about how you got there (if you need a visa). I mean they hired you as an intern....

I think your current PD should be helping you. Can he/she suggest some residencies that you'd have a good shot to get in to?

I suggest signing up for Findaresident on the NRMP site also...it has a list of open residency spots, including for internal medicine. Most all of these are outside-the-match spots.

I am a MD/PHD student. I can use my F-1 visa for the first year but not for the rest years. He did say he will make phone calls n letters if I find where has opening. I called a few this AM. Most programs are full.🙁

What countries will not allow their citizens to have a J1 visa?
