question regarding post-bacc and AMCAS

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi, I saw no one replied to you, so I thought I'd give my two cents.

You should apply.

And that analogy is silly...I mean if getting into med school is figuratively the "second date" then what your counselor is basically telling you is don't apply, ever. That's garbage. You can't wait until your scores look "perfect" because they never will.
On the other hand, don't just slack off this year. Do whatever you can, ie extra classes, research, more volunteering, whatever is appropriate in your case, to make you look like a better applicant next year if you don't get in this time.

Basically what I'm saying is, based on the info you gave, I don't think it is a bad idea to apply this cycle.

I agree with the above poster....

You SHOULD apply! I think your stats are good enough to TRY AT LEAST. And, if you do have to reapply again, I heard you can contact those schools who rejected you and ask them what you can do to improve your application the next time around.

I heard the application process is all about chance if you have good stats......

GOOD LUCK!

: DISCLAIMER : I, too, will be applying this year so my comment is based on what I have heard from other sources! Please don't flame me! 😱 😀

I'm gonna be the bubble-buster and say if you're reluctant then you should not apply. I've actually heard from my advisor at Duke that you should put forth your best application the first time through. I kinda agree with this because the process is so financially draining and time consuming that it can truly wipe you out one time through. Do what you will but what's one extra year improving your gpa given the grand scheme of things. But still, with your strong MCAT score, you may still have a successful application...it truly is a crap-shot with the numbers game. Best of luck on whatever you decide, this was only one opinion and not necessarily the right one...

I came out of a post-bacc program that actually had us apply the same year we were in the program. Your stats are decent and if you're comfortable, by all means apply. If you're going into a post-bacc to primarily improve your GPA (your MCAT sounds competitive), try to figure out what kind of boost you'd get if you aced all your post-bacc classes. If you're GPA already showed an upward trend and you have other relavent experiences you should get an even break from the adcoms this year. If not, saving yourself the money from applying and doing really well in your post-bacc year might yield your best application.

I would apply. As long as you have some experiences to add to your application you have as good a shot as anyone.

and apply early

If you're not that selective geographically speaking, go for it. You're not getting any younger, BUT you could gain a lot from doing some kind of postbac/masters.

I'm happy with the time I took since I finished undergrad in '98. I was able to do a lot and accomplish a lot on a relatively low key timeline. Hopefully, things will work out on my first crack at getting in somewhere.

No matter what, don't waste your time and enjoy the process.

AAK
