i wanted to hear opinions from current med students who took histology & anatomy in undergrad. next sem is my last sem before going to med school, and i was thinking bout taking anatomy & histo since i heard they help alot. But then, it'll be a difficult semester for me and i kinda wanna releax and enjoy my last sem before graduating. So for med student who took these course, did u guys think it helped alot???? and if u had to choose one, which course would u choose? thanks alot!

I'd take histo, if anything. It's a pretty easy class. It has helped me a lot in med school also.

But you'll do fine in med school either way. If it's going to make a stressful semester, don't bother.

What kind of grading system does your medical school have? If there's already an honors/highpass system in place during your first year and you're a gunner then it might benefit you to see the material once in UG. If your first year is just pass/fail then I wouldn't bother and you should just enjoy the last bit of college.

I'd say have fun in undergrad and worry about the anatomy and histo in med school. The course focus might not be the same and even if it is, there's likely a chance that it won't go into nearly the depth that the med school courses do.

I still think the ability to recognize tissue (or even know how to use the microscope) is worthwhile. Some of my classmates would be focused on dirt on the lens and wouldn't even have the tissue in place.

If you use a microscope for histo, that might be useful. All of our images were digitized and recognizing tissue for us is only a small part of the class. The rest is knowing all the details of molecular processes that go on in tissues.

I didn't take histology in undergrad, and in med school I did just fine (in fact my highest grade so far was histo).
Anatomy helped minimally. In undergrad you don't go in as great detail with what you need to know - so you might remember the bigger structures, but you'll still have a lot of small structures to learn. From what I've seen in my friends, those that took it in undergrad and those that didn't still had to put in the same amount of time and there seemed to be no correlation/helpfulness.
If I had to chose one, I'd say histo - especially if you end up going to a med school that uses microscopes. Ours were digitized and the exam was on the projector (no microscopes at all).

Med school is hard enough, so I see how people can say to relax in undergrad and enjoy it till it ends. Honestly though, that's not what I'd recommend. Looking back on first year, I think a little knowledge of anatomy, physiology, or histo would have gone a long way. At the very least, you're just getting familiar with the terminology in undergrad and then you build the knowledge in med school. Take the undergrad course. Don't go crazy, but think of it like a prep course. You'll be thankful once you're in med school and there are a million things on your plate. If you're hearing a concept for the second time, you're already ten steps ahead. I'm not going to mislead you and say it's not helpful, because it will be.

So if everything is digital in histo (it is at my school too!), how are we supposed to get trained on using microscopes well in actual practice!!

Just saying....😕
years of residency?

I'm sure you could do research in path if that's what you really wanted to do.

No one really uses a microscope except pathologists and that's what pathology residency is for.

How did you get out of undergrad without learning to use a microscope? I took numerous labs where we had to look at stuff.

take an easy semester and enjoy college...best years of my life

I took anatomy in college, and I don't think that it helped to prepare me for med school anatomy at all. In undergrad, 99% of the focus was on recognizing certain muscles, bones and organs. We spent almost no time on vesses, nerves, or the lymph system....and, in my opinion, those are the parts of anatomy that are actually challenging.

As for histology, it might be more helpful to you than anatomy. At my school, histo makes its way into every block we cover. If you are good with a microscope and the normal anatomy, you can fly through lab and get easy points during the image section of the exams.
