So by the 15th we have to designate an acceptance to only one school. Do we have to go into a certain website and declare one acceptance? Or do we just email the schools we are declining and let them know we are going elsewhere?

Thanks

Just email all the schools you are declining and tell them you would like to withdraw. Make the email polite, but short. You don't need to tell them what school you are choosing.

+1. Definitely withdraw from the schools you will not be attending. Some schools allow you to withdraw online (school specific site where you check your app status), while others require that you email the admissions office. I'm not 100% sure, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to also email the school you plan on attending and confirm your intent to matriculate.

so there's no centralized website that we go to accept 1 school? I would think the AAMC does something like this. If it's all just communication between me and the schools, how to the schools I'm accepted at know what my other acceptances are? There has to be a centralized website to do this from isn't there?

lol if you don't believe me you could try googling this. There's no centralized website where you make your decision. Schools have their own thing (something like 'multiple acceptance report') where they can see where their accepted candidates are also holding acceptances. But you have to withdraw from each school individually.

I just emailed the schools I am not planning to attend. I figured if anything goes wrong I have a copy of those emails proving I attempted to withdraw. I get paranoid about this stuff...

Why have you not already emailed schools that you know you aren't attending?

Also, really? You're too lazy to send out 1-20 emails to schools withdrawing your acceptance(s)? GL next year.

Because I've needed some time to think things over. I know there are many, many people on this board still holding multiple acceptances.

When did I ever say I was too lazy? It just makes sense to me that there would be a centralized system which would make things more efficient. After all, the application process was all centralized. Thanks for jumping to conclusions and attacking others for no reason, though. GL next year.

Thanks to everybody else.

I'm defending the waitlisters who are struggling more than you and I can understand.

And for future reference - Doing something that many people on SDN are doing.... isn't a good benchmark to go by.

I'm pretty sure plenty of people who aren't on sdn hold multiple seats until they get their financial aid, which often approaches the deadline. Being on a waitlist sucks but it's part of the game. Just deal with what it is, no need to get all mad at op because they needed time to figure out what they wanted to do. It's a big decision!

It does make sense that there would be a centralized system to withdraw, however...there is not. We promise we aren't lying. I wrote one email, changed the school name, and sent it everywhere I was withdrawing.

Are you guys with multiple acceptances informed by AMCAS by email to withdraw??

How do people not on SDN or those who go onto AMCAS website know about this deadline?

If you never went on the amcas website you probably didn't get into a US allopathic medical school

Also I think they sent me an email a few weeks back reminding me to review traffic rules regarding multiple acceptance holders

Not true. But, there honestly wasn't a way for non SDNers/AMCAS visiters to know?

I ask this because there are people that never use SDN or visit AMCAS and are holding multiple acceptances who may just be sitting around waiting on their financial aids to come out or something.

How do people submit their primary without visiting the amcas website?

They can submit their primary, but then after getting multiple acceptances they may never check back at AMCAS until June or something.

It's in the paperwork, in the instructions, and in the agreement you have to digitally sign before submitting. It's on the applicant to remember.

Aside from that, I got an early April email from the aamc reminding me to visit their site for application recommendations. And about every school that I'd been accepted to but hadn't declined sent me multiple reminders to decide and let them know by the deadline.

Don't worry- people know.

Many schools are not issuing the financial aid until after the deadline. MCG is one (Their goal is end of the month for accepted students.) One of the adcomms said her school doesn't issue recruitment scholarships until mid-May.

As someone who was waitlisted throughout all of last year and is currently sitting on two more waitlists, I would like to thank you for having compassion.

Compassion seems to occur less and less on SDN these days.

I also agree about the don't do what many people on SDN thing, I have seen so many SDNers lie about their application, what they do/did, etc that it frightens me that these people are going into the medical profession.

So what happens if you don't withdraw from all schools by May 15th? I'm sure some people are still fighting over scholarship offers with schools past the deadline, so what do they do in that case? The moment you withdraw you lose any leverage you might have had.

Also, what happens if you get off a waitlist after May 15th? How much time do you have?

Definitely sympathize with the WL people, but keep in mind that many school send last minute merit based awards, so it might be to your best interest to hold on to places that might do that (only if a merit award would sway you though) up to a few days before the deadlines.

You can try getting extensions from each of the schools you are considering while you sort things out. As I understand it, the important part is that schools don't see you with other acceptances past May 15th if you haven't explained the situation.

As for WL, I've heard of stories where they give the student 24 hours to decide :S (if its past May 15, other wise they have to give you until then).

Good to know, thanks.

A friend of mine was pulled from a waitlist after May 15th, the other school that they were accepted at promptly emailed them and said that they had 4 days to decided. I am not sure if that is an across the board thing or just that particular schools policy. Regardless, you will be informed by the schools you are accepted at that you need to make a decision within "x amount of time."

One of the schools I am looking at is 24 hours is what I hear which means I am going to have to be connected constantly to my email as that is how they notify and I am on a weird sleep schedule.

My comment was regarding how long after the offer is made that the applicant has to make a decision, not how long we will look for you.

Yes, I got what you were saying. In that school it is 24 hours from when it is offered and it is offered via email. If they email me at noon, when I am sleeping, I am going to have until the following noon to accept. They would require an acceptance via their website which is ALWAYS down and that I always have to call to get it fixed and that usually takes a few days for them to fix it.

I see.
