I have a few questions about NYCOM for current NYCOM students.
What is the dress code at NYCOM?

How does one participate in the note service? How much does it cost?

Is it hard to find housing around NYCOM? How expensive is it? Do most students share houses/ apartments?

How are the third and forth year rotations set up? Do you get a choice of where you go? Are there any rotations or hospitals that you'd be better off avoiding?

What does everyone do for food? I know that there is no cafeteria.

What is a typical day like? (Time classes start/ end. Amount of time alloted for lunch. Lecture and lab schedules. How late students stay on campus)

I know these are a lot of questions and I probably have tons more but I'd appreciate any info you could give me on NYCOM. Thanks in advance.

Here goes:

Dress code: Nice jeans and a shirt with collar (or nicer dress) with white lab coat. Reality - rarely enforced.

Note taking service: If there is one, I don't know about it. You shouldn't need that. Detailed lecture handouts are given by the professors, which contain nearly all info. that will be tested on.

Housing: People live all over the area; they share houses or apartments. 2 bedroom apt. approx. $1100-1300.

Rotations: not there yet; extensive consortium of hospitals in the five burroughs and L.I.; you do get to have some say in where you go, but I don't know much about that yet.

Food: there is a snack counter at school with sandwiches, fruit, bagals, etc... there is also talk of a cafeteria next year. There are also many stores and restaurants close; Also there are refrigerators and many bring lunches.

Typical day: Some days you will have lectures from 9 to 5. Other days you will have lectures in the mornings and labs in the afternoon. Students are on campus all day and night. Obviously some choose to study at home and some on campus. They supposedly kick you out at 2 a.m., but I've been here until 2:30 and later and have never seen the actual lock-up.

Good luck.

How do incoming students go about finding housing at NYCOM?

NYCOM has a housing folder in the library that contains listings for rooms/apartments for rent around the neighborhood. The folder also contains people who are looking for housemates to share a house. Just go the library and ask the librarian for the housing folder.
