Questions for the girls interviewing

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I like how women can take any subject and make it be about shopping and clothes.

Hey now, I seem to recall that you guys can turn ANY post into a sport's post!

As far as the stilettos go......HELL NO girl! And I'm always in heels, its just that I want to be comfortable walking around w/o changing shoes. I got a tip from another post on the subject about HushPuppy shoes. Found a pair of their black MaryJanes heels that are "no frills" -professional, but cute. And I find that they are very comfortable walking in for hours! Good luck! :luck:

I was really worried about what to wear before my interviews but now, after having gone through them, as long as you look professional I really don't think anyone at the schools care what you wear. I'm not the type to really judge others so I don't really think I noticed what others wore. I did however pay specific attention to hair. My hair is really thin and fine and barettes just slide out even with hair spray. I ended up just wearing it down so I was the most comfortable. I've noticed at my interviews that most other girls have worn it down also which really surprized me.

I wore a knee length pinstripe black skirt suit that I really liked with 3 inch heels. By about the 4th inteview, I was pretty used to them, but they really sucked in the beginning. For my first interview, I was bleeding on my ankle by the time I had my interview and was in total pain. I would have bought more comfortable shoes after that but didn't really have the money and really liked them. I probably looked dowdy since I have two kids and am not the same size as I was at 22. I don't think any of the interviewers gave a crap about that and I liked what I was wearing so, oh well.

OK I am going to share this story, and I'm sorry if this person posts on SDN. I interviewed at a DO school (not going to say which one) and there was a girl who was just a mess. I hope she was incredible smart and got in, but she looked just - a mess.

She had a black skirt suit, and forgot to snip the threads that keep the slit part of the skirt in back together at the store, so she walked around all day with a pencil-style skirt with a gaping hole in the back. She also had horrendous dandruff, and her suit was black. Somehow, through the day, she also managed to run her pantyhose on both legs all the way up the back. She was wearing makeup, but it looked like this interview was the first time she ever wore it. Eyeshadow bright and not blended, blush not blended, etc.

She seemed nice, but was really quiet and didn't talk to many people. Like I said, I hope she got in. I felt really sorry for her by the end of the day. I can't believe I'm posting this, but learn from this, people!

Uhhh!! that girl was me, Megboo you have hurt my feelings... 🙁

I have noticed that over my 6 interviews, that approximately 1/3 - 1/2 of the girls will wear skirts. Many of them look very classy!

EEL, I found my suit at Dilliards. I don't know if they are everywhere, though. The girl was extremely helpful, who I happened to go to high school with, and I got my suit for $98. I knew absolutely nothing about suits and had never wore one so I just begged for help everywhere I went. I got all my accessories and shirts at New York and Co and they were very helpful too.

 It's sad but I can almost picture that being me. Especially the makeup part.

We have a Dillards at the mall too so I will have to check there. I live in Dallas/Fort Worth so I'm pretty sure I could find most stores that have suits. I think I will leave the kids with my husband and go next Saturday afternoon or Sunday. Thanks!

LOL - no one like the person I posted about has posted in any of the interview threads, so i'm fairly certain they're not an SDN regular. Otherwise I would have held my tongue.

Seriously, I think stuff like that happens to all of us. Just to be fair, I'll share one of my most embarrassing moments -

Grandparents 50th anniversary in '94. Had a special mass for them (we're Catholic). My brother, cousin, and I were selected to carry up the communion food and I read the petitions. I had to go potty just prior, so I met my bro and cousin at the back of the church. We lined up with the stuff and walked up the aisle. My brother kept walking on my toes and right up my back and I was whispering to him to "slow down". When I got to the front of the church, and turned around, my whole family (20+ people) in the front rows, were motioning something about my dress.

Turns out I tucked the back of my dress into my pantyhose after going potty and then walked up the aisle to the front of the church. Thank God I was wearing undies, and they weren't a thong!

Oh yeah - I was 17 at the time.

Oh megboo how mortifying! 😳 I actually can't think of anything super embarrassing right now and hopefully my interview won't be it.

I was embarrassed for about 2 seconds - it was extremely funny. And not on video. Ha!

So now, you can't do any worse than that - so go get 'em!

It sounds like you've got a great sense of humor. 😀 I've heard stories like that and ones about toilet paper being stuck to shoes. I'm paranoid so I always check. Hopefully you're right and I can't do worse than that. 👍

Just make sure to check your skirt if you wear one. That was the best lesson I ever learned LOL.

Also, for the ladies that are more well-endowed, be careful of the "gap" that occurs with button-up shirts. 😀

I will definitely not be wearing a skirt! I have already been thinking about the gap problem as it's been difficult buying shirts in the past that don't do that.

That one always seems to get me. It's so embarrassing and I'm not that big. Luckily the suit jacket kind of covers that area up.

Megboo, too bad it wasn't on tape. You could of sent it to funniest home videos.

Ugh now I'm thinking about going out and buying new shoes 🙁 I don't want to buy more shoes... too bad I can't return the other ones now. Looks like I might go shoe shopping today. I'm going to have way too many pairs of black shoes.

Oh, that's very nice of you. Actually, I REALLY liked what you wore. Very original, yet classy. 👍 It was nice meeting you too, I'm glad you mentioned something and told me who you were. I thought that day was so fun. I thought the dynamics of the interview group was just hilarious and everyone had such a good sense of humor. I didn't want to leave when you all went to the tri-point. That was by far my best interview day other than having been in high school marching band with one of the ambassadors and having worked for 3 years after undergrad with another applicant at my Nebraska interview.

Good luck with all the schools . I think it would be cool if we ended up as classmates.

MegBoo!!!!! You're cracking me up! That poor girl . . . if she was on SDN maybe we could have given her some advice. 😉 I love all your stories! 😀

I was stressing about my interview attire, but now I'm so over it! I'm wearing a dark grey pantsuit (light wool blend material) with a white collared button down shirt underneath, with black shoes (with a very small, 1 inch kitten heel) and some pearls. I'm going to either put my hair half up/half down or leave it down with a black headband.

I'm sure all of us are going to look fabulous and very professional! I wish we all had some interviews together . . . that would be fun!

Good Luck ladies! :luck:

P.S. This thread rocks! :horns:

I know what you mean! I have 4 pairs of black heels (all slightly different)! It's like every time I go to a freakin wedding or graduation, I feel the need to buy a new pair! 😱 I bought new shoes to go with my suit, but they were really cheap. Is there a DSW where you live? They've got great prices and really cute, fashionable shoes. 😀

I got into CCOM wearing a brown tweed suit coat from Ralph Lauren, a white long-sleeve shirt with a sleeveless tan sweater over, dark brown pants, and black shoes.

Ooooo I really like how that looks. Very classy! It sounds like maybe too many articles of clothing for me though. I tend to sweat when I'm nervous-oh and you can guarantee I'll be nervous that day. I love the brown suit idea, I'll probably end up with something brown.

Also, that's a good tip-if it's hard for you ladies to find an entire two-piece suit (and one that actually fits), just buy the suit coat and pants separately. Girls can get away with their suit pieces not being the same fabric and exact color.

I definitely agree! It would be so fun if we ended up at the same interviews. And, yes, this thread is pretty much the coolest. 😛
By the way, your outfit sounds great! Very chic. I love that it's not black!

Yeah, I think it is fun to meet people at the interviews from SDN. Good luck at DMU Prions.

I think it would be cool too. What do you say when you're there though? Excuse me everyone but is there a t-funk in the house? 😛

Why not? It is a little weird, at least to me, when you say your username to someone you recognize or vice-versa. I like it though.

Sounds good to me. 🙂 I don't believe anyone is interviewing with me at DCOM on 11/30 yet though. I think you and megboo would be two of the easiest to recognize. By the time I get more interviews though I'm sure you guys will have chosen your schools and are lounging on a beach sipping margaritas waiting for school to start.

oooohhhh.... margaritas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

beach!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ok my shoe problem is solved. I wiped off the bottoms of my very slightly worn heels and exchanged them for way more easy to walk in shoes!!! I think they are mary janeish with a strap and a buttom. I think they will work really well since they have a chunkier heel. Ohhh and I went to claires and got two black handbands that had the ribbon that tyed underneath. I'm going to try on the whole outfit tonight and see how it works.

Hmm it'd be nice to run into some people at interviews. I should be easy to find since my username is my name.

Okay here's a stupid question for everyone. Do they have you wear name tags at interviews? And another question, how many times is it okay to correct someone when they mispronounce your name?

We've worn name tags at every interview I've been at. I'm named after a Sioux Native American and I have a really weird name and am just used to people mispronouncing it. I really don't care if people mispronounce it but I usually correct them once in order to appear somewhat assertive and so they don't feel bad later on if they find out they have been saying it incorrectly. They ususally don't end up saying it right anyway, though. When people are trying to read my name off a piece of paper and I can tell they are uncomfortable, I usually just try to interupt, say it, and introduce myself. I don't know the correct protocol though but I wouldn't continuously correct someone.

That's exactly like me! Well only I'm not named after a Sioux Native American. I am intrigued. I don't think my name is that hard to pronounce but people always struggle with it and mostly don't pronounce it right even after I've told them how to say it correctly. I'm so used to maybe correcting people once but then letting it go. I didn't want to seem not assertive enough in an interview setting though so I wasn't sure if that was still okay. Oh yeah and it's almost always spelled wrong too so I'm sure my nametag will be wrong as well.

I would love to be interviewing with you at DCOM 🙁 My friend is an MS1 there and she loves it. They've had my file "under review" since 9/25! 😡 I guess they're on the fence about me. You got the call for an interview pretty soon after you were complete, no? Maybe I should call them on Monday and remind them that I grew up in Appalachia?

I'm guessing the day they received my letters is the day I got the call. I had the LORs sent from Interfolio on Friday the 26th and Jody called me in the afternoon on Tuesday the 30th. My husband had his LORs sent on 10/18 and received the call on 10/24. I think you should definitely call at least to show that you're interested. Then when they invite you for an interview you can schedule for 11/30!! 😀

I think my post was lost....if this is a double one, sorry...

I would second the cleavage part. At one interview, I felt so sorry for this girl, sweet as can be, but 2/3 of her cleavage was exposed under the suit. I just didn't have the heart to tell her to button up her suit, anything to cover it up.

And this process is expensive, but don't wear shoes that are worn away on the heels, with the leather shredded and hanging off.

I didn't wear black. I wore either a light grey or brown suit -- got them at Macy's.

I wore my hair up and down, just depended on the weather.

Great thread ladies! Coolest one to date. Feels like a slumber party for the SDN ladies. 👍

Maybe that was her secret weapon to try to get an acceptance.

It would be awesome if we ended up as classmates. You are so friendly! I thought the dynamic of our group was sort of funny too...Don't worry about the tri-point, we didn't end up going. We just went back to the school, took a minute to fill out the survey and went our separate ways. You really didn't miss anything. Good luck to you during the process and getting in to your top choice! :luck:

They have to order it? Sorry I'm a very casual dresser (read: pajamas) and I know absolutely nothing about suits. I wish I had someone helpful to go with me. What are some good stores that will be helpful but not treat me like an idiot? 😛

I wasn't sure if I wanted a suit with pants or a skirt. The limited has suits with both so it's interchangeable, also it's called a travel suit and requires no ironing. I have been on two interviews and wore the pants both times. I also have long hair and tied it back in a ponytail, just so I wouldn't have to worry about.

Ialso it's called a travel suit and requires no ironing.

Oooh, that's awesome! My suit is a wool blend, so I think I'm going to need to iron it when I get to the hotel.

What accessories did you buy can you please tell. I am lost with suits. I am also going to the stores and asking for help, but don't know about acccessories=bag?

I bought a little purse from NY bc it was cheap (only $7) but was looking for a larger one. They were way more expensive so I stuck with the little one. The girl at NY also said it was typical to have a watch to appear time-conscious and since I just use my cel phone to tell time, I had to buy one. I also bought a couple of sets of earrings and a necklace and had them pick out two shirts for me. I brought in the suit and they picked the best matching shirts since my pinstripes were cream and I didn't even know it mattered (I just thought they were white). I also got a large barette that they recommended but never wore it bc I couldn't get it to stay in. I got my shoes from JCPenny's on sale for $25 but I wish I would have looked around for something more comfortable. They had about three inch heels with little bows on the front and a more rounded look. I don't think I would have found something I liked better, appearance-wise. I think that's about all for me.

Wow! You guys have some great posts. I had to jump in on the conversation.

I am wearing a black and light blue pinstripe wool suit from Brooks Brothers. Blue shirt underneath, too, with black 3in heels (not the hooker type, but the thicker business professional type). I wish I could get away with a skirt, but I think my legs look a little too tree-trunkish so who really wants to see that! I got to go with the black pants with added length-wise pinstripes to add a thinning effect to those badboys.

I have seen a few horrendous things on interviews. There was a girl who apparently was a little hot during the day and decided to take off her suit jacket. Bad idea. She had massive sweat marks that the entire admissions office as well as the student tour guides all got a nice look at! It is called high powered anti-perspirant (spelling?) people!! And yes, I saw the girl with the gap in her shirt due to being much more well-endowed than the rest of us. It is just too bad that she wasn't wearing something simple and conservative underneath. There was lace and provocative stuff going on and even I had to look and I'm a girl!! No wonder the guys from the interview kept looking in her direction.

Oh yeah, I carry this little black leather (or maybe pleather. don't really know. it looks like leather, though.) file folder that zips up. It has room for a few pens, slots to stick papers or brochures in, an area that you can place business cards and place where you can throw in money, a tiny wallet and maybe a tube of lipstick or a powder case. It's great! I got it at staples!

That sounds like a really good idea. I haven't been on any interviews yet, so I was wondering what type of purses you all were bringing. Most of my purses are those large and over-sized ones (my brother more appropriately calls them suitcases), so I was just planning on bringing a small clutch or something petite and over-the-shoulder. How many papers and things do you actually get? I'm not sure if a small purse will hold all of that. If I get one of those folder things, should I take a purse too?

I can fit quite a bit. I have stuffed at least a handful of large packets of financial aid info, programs brochures, fitness and club activities, etc, and I can still zip it up with everything else like the lipstick and stuff in it. Obviously, I clear all of this out before going on another interview. It might be a bit embarrassing if I show up to a school and a financial aid packet from say Temple falls out at a KCOM interview. That would be the definitive black mark!!

I'm bringing my "bowling bag", AKA my big purse (it's a black, pleather, large sized bag). 😀 That way, I can fit all the stuff they give you during the interview/tour plus more (make-up, medicine and other random items that I probably won't end up using, but will make me feel like I have everything just in case)!
