Questions for the girls interviewing

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yay! Congrats on the suit EEL! That's a huge hurdle to jump over. Good luck on your interview. From all of your posts, it sounds like you'll rock your interview with your personality! 🙂
Okay, for your sleeve issue I would cuff the sleeves of your blouse a few times or roll them up until they are the right length of your jacket, then safety pin them just inside the end of the jacket sleeves. Cuffing the sleeves will probably be the most comfortable rather than just pinning and no cuffs, because then you won't have extra fabric that feels baggy under the jacket sleeves. That should solve the length problem.

Okay you're going to have to explain to me exactly what does it mean to cuff my sleeves? It sounds like a good idea but I don't know what you're talking about exactly.

Sorry! My attempt at describing how to "cuff" sleeves failed. Wow, that's more difficult to describe than I thought haha. It's obviously one of those things that's easier to understand by seeing it done, but I'll try my best. 🙂 By "cuffing" I just meant "roll the sleeves up". There's a neat way of doing it so that it doesn't look sloppy and bulky under your jacket. Just take the end of your sleeves (you can do this before you put the shirt on too) and roll them up a couple times until they are slightly shorter than your jacket sleeves, so the shirt sleeves don't peek out. Try the shirt on after you have rolled them up and make sure it's the right length with the jacket on. Once you have rolled them up so the sleeves are the desired shorter length, I would recommend you iron the "rolled up" part of the sleeve so it stays flat. Then you can pin this rolled up part to the inside of your jacket sleeves.

Okay, hopefully that helps! Anyway, I'm sure you'll solve the problem some way and will look great for your interview!

Thanks for taking the time to explain that more! I will have to go buy some pins so I can actually try that. Would it look stupid to fold the sleeve back over my jacket sleeve? I've seen people do something like that before and it looked good but I wasn't sure. I won't be able to get the arms shortened on the jacket because at this point I can't even find anyone to hem my pants by Thursday and they have to be hemmed! :scared:

Okay a few other random questions for everyone. How did you carry your suit on the plane? A garment bag? If so is that considered one piece of carryon because I was planning on having my laptop bag and possibly my backpack too. I will have to check my suitcase and pray it gets there safely. Did you always leave your suit jacket buttoned? Do I have to wear pantyhose or can I just wear thin, black dress socks? Oh yeah and do I have to have heels/pumps or can I just get nice regular dress shoes with a chunky heel?

ok I'll bite since I wore suits everyday in my pre-post bacc pre med life 🙂

I would just get a garment bag and put it in your suitcase that is what i always did when I traveled and I traveled alot. It shouldn't get wrinkled but if it does then just hang it in the hotel bathroom and turn on the shower hot to steam it

I never button my suit jacket I think it looks stiff and closed off (from other people) it is one of those body language symbols that says 'stay away I'm nervous and don't want to open myself up to you'

If you are just going to wear dress shoes, dress socks are fine, if you are going to whear high heels then I would wear panty hose

hope this helps

garment bag, always carry on myself on plane b/c I am too paranoid about loosing it-- except for last interview(i was tired of carrying it on!!). I left my suit open at all my interviews, but I had a suit dress, not pants. I think thin socks are fine. And remember to smile, firm handshakes(went to a psychology of first impressions class, very interesting about what I learned about intervieweing skills).

Good luck, I'm rooting for you. I sometimes wish I wasn't so burnt out on interviews to decline LMU. I've heard such great things about the school here.

I brought my suit in a garment bag on the plane. I think it does count as two. I didn't wear heels; I wore Mary Jane style shoes, and I wore thin black dress socks (looked like hose). I'm not big on fashion, so I don't know if those shoes go with a pantsuit or not.

Don't worry -- you're going to do great!! Just relax and let your wonderful self shine through! We'll all be pulling for you! :luck::luck:

I have my first interview coming up so am of course starting to over-analyze everything I possibly can! Im wondering what else did you take to the interview, if anything? To job interviews I've always carried some type of professional looking bag that i borrow with a resume/purpose statement and such, but that doesnt seem right. I also don't really want to carry much with me...and purses arent really my thing, my timbuk2 bag is more my style, but I dont think thats too interview appropriate 😀.

EEL08-I've read thru many of your posts-Congrats on the interview..when is it?

Thanks for any input!

Oh good, I'm not the only one! Now I'm freaking out about finding a garment bag and thinking about a bag for ther interview. I don't have anything that would actually go with my suit. Do I have to carry a bag in? I usually carry a purse but it's blue and far from looking professional. Hmmm, maybe I have to go get one of those too. Who wants to write my 15 page paper for me? Thanks to everyone for the input! Don't think it's the last of questions from me though because I'm sure there will be more to come! 🙂

My interview is on Friday at DCOM. Where and when is your first interview?

Next week at LECOM-E. Don't worry, I bet the first one is the most stressful, right?!

Good Luck on Friday! 👍👍

I don't know if you will, but since I had my kids with me on the plane, I ended up putting my suit in my suitcase just in one of those plastic bags that come with the suit. I don't have a lot of money so I have to be thrifty where I can. I don't even think it is possible to wrinkle my suit and I would assume they are all like that so I don't think you would have to worry about that. The only worry then would be the airport losing luggage, but when you have to carry a kid, a carseat, and watch another kid; losing luggage is the least of your worries. 😀

Sounds like a good idea too. I just don't know if I have the time or energy to try to find a garment bag. Wait, actually my husband might have one. I will probably just stick it in my luggage because I really need/want to take my laptop and backpack as my two carry-ons. If I end up needing to iron my suit I'll just beg Moestar to come to my room and supervise so I don't mess anything up. I couldn't bring the kids because it's so freakin' expensive to fly there. Oh and plus that would mean two carseats and trying not to lose one or both toddlers. Just the thought of it makes me nervous. 🙄 I do feel guilty though for leaving my babies for the whole weekend. I don't like to think about it even though I know I'll have a lot of fun with my friends.

Wow, I don't know how you moms do it! Way to go! I can't imagine doing this whole process with a kid or two, but I give you all props!

Oh shoot, I just forgot! What is everyone doing about makeup? I don't ever wear any so I actually don't even own any. I was going to go and beg one of the clinique ladies at the mall to help me but I forgot until just now. 😱

Good Luck on Friday! 👍👍

Thank you!! I actually haven't heard back from LECOM-E yet so I'm wondering what the deal is. My husband received an interview at the end of September and it's scheduled for December 7. I'm hoping that I'm just working myself up too much and once I get there I'll wonder what I was ever worried about. I hope so anyway. Good luck on your interview too! 😀

I would say, go with what's more natural and comfortable for you. If you don't normally wear makeup on a day-to-day basis, then don't worry about it. Just get ready and look the way that will make you comfortable and confident. If you would really feel better wearing makeup to your interview, you might go with just some really basic/neutral makeup. I would recommend some lipgloss or light shade lipstick, mascara, and possibly powder or light foundation if you really wanted. Don't even worry about going to clinique at this point. I would just swing by a drug store or even supermarket.

How do you know what shade of foundation to get? I might skip the mascara because I once had a friend who poked me in the eye with the mascara brush. Scarred me for life. 😛 I do like wearing lipgloss/lipstick though. Does anyone know of good lipgloss that won't come off so fast?

I usually don't wear makeup on a daily basis but only when I go out or something. I just kind of did what I usually do for that but tried to make it as natural as possible. I don't think that makeup is necessarily a requirement though but it kind of destresses me in the morning of a stressful event so I use it. If you are not so comfortable with makeup, I would not do more than what you are comfortable with or else you may feel wierd all day.

👍 That's kind of what I was trying to say but I was tripping up on my words.

I'm not at all comfortable in makeup. Stuff on my lips, yes. Makeup in general, no. The last time my sister put makeup on me I told her I looked like a prostitute. Guess I'll try to find some good lipstuff and not worry about the rest.

You know it's funny but now that I have kids and I'm going to school, I wonder why undergrad wasn't so much easier than it was. It's all about adjusting to the different things you are juggling in your life and at that time it was just different things. It is so totally worth it though! 😍

I ended up getting superstay lipcolor by maybelline. I think it is about $5 and it really lasts a long time. I really like it.

I can't even match my own olive/brownish colored face, so I am definately not one to answer that. That's usually more trial and error if you're lucky enough to match well to the foundation colors. There is only one foundation I can find, Sand by Almay, that I can match to myself but I doubt we're the same on that one.

Yeah that foundation stuff sounds a little too complicated for me. I will check into the lipcolor though. So generally lighter colors are good? I plan on wearing my pink shirt so maybe something that won't clash with that?

I had my suit in a small carry on bag. I folded it the best I could and then ironed it right when I got to the hotel. It wasn't really that wrinkled, but I guess it depends on the fabric. I wore my jacket unbuttoned and buttoned throughout the day. I think you can wear it however you like until the interview . . . I would button it up for the actual interview.

A couple of girls at my interview were wearing flats or dress shoes. I wore heels (a very small heel mind you) and I actually went without panty hoes . . . just bare feet! The panty hoes were too slippery and my feet kept slipping out of my shoes, so I went to the bathroom and took them off! You couldn't really tell, though.
