Hi, I'm in the process of applying for residency in pathology. I would like to stay in the Philadelphia area and would appreciate feedback on programs in the area. Thanks

Perhaps I could list some word-of-mouth I've heard on the Philly programs; if anyone could comment or add to these it would be appreciated

Penn: Excellent program, long hours (particularly surg path)
Jeff: good program, also long hours (surg path)
Drexel: Rumor is that every placenta gets grossed?? (ie every birth, not just births with complications...is this true or normal?)
Temple: tends to take Temple grads
Penn Hospital: Strong AP, reasonable surg path hours, weak CP

Hi Bgabes

I'm guessing that you go to school in the Phily area? I graduated from Temple last year, and I'm currently in a family med program in the area. However, I'm reapplying to Path this year (it's a long story that I've posted about on here before).

Anyway, I had applied to path last year, but I probably don't have any more information than you do. I rotated through path at Temple, and really enjoyed their program (I'm hoping to be there next year). One of the things that I enjoyed about Temple's program is that the AP and CP are mixed throughout the 4 years. If I remember correctly, some of the other programs in the city break it into seperate years (like an AP year, then a CP year and alternate). All of the residents there are really down to earth and happy. The attendings are also very diverse in their interests and easy to get along with.

I think that the surg path hours are going to be long no matter where you go. The residents on surg path at Temple would get out anywhere from 6 or 7 pm until 11 pm or midnight, all depending on their skill and the caseload that day. The other thing that I have heard from speaking with residents is that AP is generally stronger at most programs than CP. I'm not sure who's got the best CP in the city.

Anyway, good luck with everything. I haven't heard from anyone yet aside from Drexel. But it's early. Maybe we'll run into each other on the interview trail!

That's interesting, I guess you and I are a lot alike.

I did a year of medicine at Abington and two years of anesthesiology at Temple and actually left anesthesia; I am taking a year off while applying to path. I'm currently moonlighting at Abington but also really hoping to get into Temple.

I do know that they only have two spots for next year, which I was told when I rotated through there (I actually did two weeks as an anesthesiology resident before I left the program there). I haven't heard from any philly programs at all and I applied 9/1, so don't feel down-it's still early.

Temple path is great, isn't it? The residents were a very laid-back group and yes, they work hard on surg but doesn't everyone?

Buzz on other programs that I know:

Temple-likes people that they are familiar with;
Penn-knows who they are going to take usually the year before, LONG hours,
Pennse-haven't heard
Drexel-don't know much, but I've heard that they are similar to temple in many respects.
Jeff-likes to take their own is what I've been told.

I actually had the fortunate experience of speaking with Jeff's former Path program director; she gave me a great deal of advice and her perspective on what as a PD she would look for in someone looking to switch specialties (especially on not completing a residency, which is the position that I am currently in).

So hang in there, and we'll see where it goes.

I'm a MS4 and recently did an elective (not in Philly) with a current Jefferson resident. She was very happy with the program. A couple of things I remember her saying were that each resident has his/her own microscope, computer, and cubicle.

The thing she like most was that each resident signed out individually with the attending, which she said was more time-efficient. She said she hardly was ever at work past 6:00 pm on a busy surg path day. I can see the benefit of one-on-one teaching, but I it seems like it also would be beneficial to see the other residents' cases when they sign out.

Drexel does gross every placenta from every birth ranging from 5-20 per day during my limited time there. Grossing them is not really a big deal and can be done in about 10 minutes each once you get good. They do have a PA who helps with some grossing, and they don't take up too much sign-out time as most attendings work through them very quickly, or even on their own if the day is running late. Not really too bad.
The surg path rotation schedule is a 3 day cycle: 1 day on bigs, 1 day on biopsies, and 1 day for sign out. However, I think that might change as they are working toward faster turn around. They also integrate AP and CP throughout all 4 years.
As a whole I found the Drexel attendings to be extremely approachable, and very eager to teach. All of the daily conferences are well run and well attended. There is also a great sense of comraderie among the residents, and they really help each other out when they can.

Bgabes,

I did my residency and fellowship in Philly. PM me for a lowdown of all of the programs.
