Hi I'm a final year Irish med student. I'm going to be doing a couple of electives in the US this autumn - internal med and emergency med.
I have heard that US students wear short white coats as opposed to long ones. I was wondering if this was true so that I could buy one if it is. Also, do you tend to wear scrubs or your own clothes? Are the scrubs provided by the hospital or do you buy your own?

Thanks for any help. ;)

Students almost always wear white coats. However, some programs students aren't allowed to wear white coats at all. I think this is true at Mayo.

Most schools have now adopted the policy that unless you're on call, you must wear dress clothes (tie for gentlemen, no open toe shoes for the ladies, etc.).

Scrubs are generally provided by the hospital.

You should really contact your specific hospital for its policies.

Cheers!
